Publisher's summary

Long Road to Abilene is a classic hero's journey, a western adventure that exemplifies the struggles, the defeats, and the victories that personify the American West. After surviving the bloody battle of Franklin and the hell of a Yankee prison camp, Cade McCall comes home to the woman he loves only to find that she, believing him dead, has married his brother. With nothing left to keep him in Tennessee, Cade journeys to New Orleans where an encounter with a beautiful woman leads to being shanghaied for an unexpected adventure at sea. Returning to Texas, he signs on to drive a herd of cattle to Abilene, where he is drawn into a classic showdown of good versus evil, and a surprising reunion with an old enemy.

Long Road to Abilene

Long Road to Abilene: The Western Adventures of Cade McCall : Robert Vaughan

An interesting tale beginning during the Civil War. and continuing on into a western setting. Cade McCall's adventures keep the listener ingaged. I want more of his story which I hope will be in future books.

The narration was annoying, the accents were terrible and detracted from the story. Jarvis Hooten should not have tried to overdo the characters. Sorry to have to say this, but good narration would have enhanced this book.

A good solid Western.

I enjoyed the book. Was a little put off by the Forest Gump narration. Interested to see the next one.

Exciting story

I really enjoyed this story. It was filled with several adventures that would have kept me guessing the outcome had I not known that there was an interview taking place

A good solid Western

I truly enjoyed hearing the narration of this story. Mr Jarvis Hooten's many voices and accents were right on and added immensely to my ability to get lost in Mr Vaughn's epic adventure. I was easily able to visualize each scene and the actions taking place.

A ReadableTale

This is book one of the Cade McCall Series. It is a bit different from the usual western style of writing. The story begins with an old man telling the story of his life to a biographer. The story ranges from the Civil War to New Orleans, South America then to Texas. It is written as first person narrations with dialogue to enhance the story.

The book is well written. The pace is fast with lots of action. Vaughan does a good job with character development. The various characters seem very realistic. There is slight humor that helps offset the violence of the Civil War. The author does fill in the scenery so the reader almost feels they are right in the story. This is one of those hard to put down books. I am going to look for more books by Robert Vaughan.

The book is seven hours and twenty-eight minutes. Jarvis Hooten narrated the book. This book would have been better with a different narrator. In my opinion Hooten overacted while reading the book. If he had been subtler in his narration, he would have been an acceptable narrator.

Good story bad narration

I was given this book in exchange for an unbiased review via audiobook boom. The narration took away from the story. I love great western books and this was a good one but the narrator should have just kept to the story and left his attempts at doing characters alone. The story followed Cade's journey from the civil War to the expansion in the west. Well written and historical although some points made me think twice about the author's take on the situation. We each have an opinion on how the west was won or taken and mostly I let author's do their own thing and just keep my opinion to myself. That being said the book should be listened to with an open mind and understanding that it is fiction and it is a pretty good fiction.

Plenty of action to pull you into the story!

Good writing combined with good reading will keep you turning pages from cover to cover in this post-war Civil War story that focuses on some people who are trying to put their lives back together as America recovers from its self-inflicted wounds.
