Publisher's Summary

Chief Officer of the Society for the Intellectually Advanced, Lord Matthew Strathmore, Earl of Whittingham, takes his position very seriously. Not only does it distract him from the painful aftermath of a gunshot wound to the leg, earned most honorably, it is important work. So he feels duty-bound to question esteemed scientist Lord Talbot about a suspect article. Matthew dashes from London to Oxfordshire, despite wretched weather that only exacerbates his injury, reminding him he is far from the dashing gentleman he once was...

Theodosia, Lord Talbot's granddaughter, has inherited his gift for inquiry, enjoying her pursuits safely away from the artifice of London society. But her identity as the true author of Talbot's article is about to be exposed. And if Matthew expects a dour bluestocking, surprises abound. Not only do Theodosia's botanical concoctions soothe his leg, he's clearly attracted by her delicate beauty. But dare she hope for more? It will take an urgent trip to London for both to discover how passion and lasting love can ignite under the cover of darkness...

Contains mature themes.

No stars

Until now I've never wanted to give no stars for a book - here it is! Only lasted 20 mins with the over emphasized breathy pronunciation for every single word by this narrator making it hard to proceed another minute despite the comical use of words so uncommon in Regency England ie workstation, or "straps" for reins attached to four well bred stallions to draw a carriage !!! If the horses are stallions and well-bred, then they're not used to pull carriages, they are at stud. A brave fool indeed to harnesses 4 stallions anywhere, unless you're Ben Hur of course.

Lucinda Brandt's books by contrast are such bliss and so well researched that silly errors are not found. VERY DISAPPOINTING INDEED

Enjoyable

Another well-written story by Annabelle Bryant, although not my favourite as I felt there were missed opportunities to expand more upon the purpose of the secondary characters within context of certain situations. There was one loose end I hope is further clarified in another AB book. Nonetheless, the leads were likeable, possessing just as much emotional as scientific intelligence and I really enjoyed their romance. I commend the author’s sensitive creation of Lord Talbot’s persona and the caring manner in which it was incorporated into the storyline. Having been in a similar situation, I thought it beautifully handled. As such, my biased 5 stars!
