The fifth entry in the CWA Gold Dagger-winning Slough House series featuring Jackson Lamb.

London Rules might not be written down, but everyone knows rule one: Cover your arse.

At MI5 headquarters Regent's Park, First Desk Claude Whelan is learning this the hard way. Tasked with protecting a beleaguered prime minister, he's facing attack from all directions himself: from the showboating MP who orchestrated the Brexit vote and now has his sights set on Number 10; from the showboat's wife, a tabloid columnist, who's crucifying Whelan in print; from the PM's favorite Muslim, who's about to be elected mayor of the West Midlands, despite the dark secret he's hiding; and especially from his own deputy, Lady Di Taverner, who's alert for Claude's every stumble. Meanwhile, the country's being rocked by an apparently random string of terror attacks.

Over at Slough House, the MI5 satellite office for outcast and demoted spies, the agents are struggling with personal problems: repressed grief, various addictions, retail paralysis, and the nagging suspicion that their newest colleague is a psychopath. Plus someone is trying to kill Roddy Ho. But collectively, they're about to rediscover their greatest strength- the ability to make a bad situation much, much worse.

Fans of Jackson Lamb and his band of MI-5 f***-ups will laugh out loud, but the book also has a poignancy and an unwavering respect for its flawed characters. I want to reread the whole series from the beginning.

Best one yet!

When will Mr. Herron publish again? The Slough Horses’ redemption efforts must continue propelled along by Justin Lamb’s ripostes!

Say it’s not so. There must be more in the series, please.

A frightening and remarkably funny continuation of great series! Reminds me of Le Carre but funnier!

Terrific story and reading

Highly recommend Slow Horse books. Very good writing with biting humor.

Roddy Ho and Jackson Lamb take center stage. As two of my favorite characters, this was easy to fall in love with.

Best Slow Horses book so far!

This is possibly the funniest book in the Slow Horse series to date. Jackson Lamb, the anti-Bond, is glorious in all his flatulent, dyspeptic, crude, cynical, and deliberately non-PC glory. Several new characters get a lot of character development, and Roddy Ho actually takes center stage as a man so invested in his own delusions he can’t be cracked under interrogation. Shirley and Coe get fleshed out quite a bit and become more sympathetic, but Louisa Guy and River are minor players in this story at best. The plot of this book is the least cohesive of all the books so far. The lynchpin of the story is a bit of dumb/bad luck, which is the way things often go in real life; however, the game plan and motivations of the evil terrorists seem tepid at best. And there are a lot of loose threads, although I’m sure a few of them will get picked up in the future. But, overall, it just didn’t gel for me. Still a good listen overall.

Witty writing, good character development, somewhat stained plot

While I enjoy each story in the series on its own, the serial nature has led to some really great character development. This book is where we get to see some more depth to multiple characters as well as some new ones.

Fanciful character development

Original plotting, fully fleshed out characters and the well-concealed humanity of Jackson Lamb. The villains are as well drawn as the antiheroes.

Sympathetic portrayal of wounded people and skilled performance.

Basically I love all the Slough House books. So why not this one as well.

Slough House strikes again

The Slow Horses series is my current favorite series. I love the sarcasm and dry humor. Narrator is perfect for the series. The opening and closing descriptions are also great. Just a great book.

Another Great Book in the Slow Horses series.
