Publisher's summary

For millennia, Stoicism has been the ancient philosophy that attracts those who seek greatness, from athletes to politicians and everyone in between. And no wonder: its embrace of self-mastery, virtue and indifference to that which we cannot control has much to offer those grappling with today's chaotic world. But who were the Stoics?

In this book, Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman offer a fresh approach to understanding Stoicism through the lives of the people who practised it. Through short biographies of all the famous and lesser-known Stoics, this book will show what it means to live stoically and reveal the lessons to be learned from their struggles and successes. The result is a treasure trove of insights for anyone in search of living a good life.

Great philosophy, amazing book, fantastic authors

I love stoicism and Ryan Holiday goes very deep on it. In this book he tells practical examples of this philosophy.

Good to learn how the stoic live their lives

A little long winded but the different stories on how the stoics live their life is powerful reminder of Memento Mori in which remember that we must die thus it's always important to learn, take accountability, think of others, be appreciative and be grateful for every single day

Uneven and hurried narration

This is my fourth Ryan Holiday book. Having read and listened to three others. The synopsis messaging here is very good for a person seeking to understand the founding thinkers and practitioners of Stoicism.
But several of the chapters are read monotonously and unnecessarily fast. There was no love shown for the words being spoken. The chapter on Cleanthes I found particularly difficult and almost gave up the book right then. The pleasant surprise is the discussion between the authors at the end of the Audio book. That was deep, true and cared-for and was well worth the listen.
