Great story, shame about the choice of narrator

I've always loved this book. And I was very excited to hear it as an audiobook. But the choice of narrator made it almost unbearable to listen to.

From his boring and monotonous cadence. To his unsuitably high voice. He really ruined this audiobook for me. Such a shame.

Wrong voice for story

While I’ve listened to Peter Kenny read other book, his voice does not match a butch and male oriented story.

Awful narration

I couldn't listen to more than 2 hours of this - so it might be a fantastic book like much of Gemmell - because the narration was so terrible. He spoke fast in a weird whispery way. Please listen carefully to a sample before buying!!

Know Your History?

If you know your history, you will quickly realise where the author is headed with this plot, based around actual recorded events. However, Davids' skilled story telling makes all his books a joy to read.
Skilled narration compliments the storyline making this a must for all Gemmel fans.

Good book but not based much of fiction.

Great characters, but I always like a basis of fact to my books. Some of the characters changes persona mid book and it was a little far fetched for my liking.

Great Introduction to Gemmell

Excellent gateway into the writings of David Gemmell and his regular elements of shades-of-grey warriors, redemption, the Source and Chaos, spirit travel and the Void.

Disappointing

While I love many of David Gemmell's books this one was pretty disappointing. It started really well then lost its way. It was as though the author wasn't really quite sure what the story was. That coupled with what felt was a half-hearted narration, it for me did not hit the spot. Peter Kenny is clearly no Sean Barret. Where I feel Gemmell really loses it is when he delves into fantasy which I don't think he can really handle convincingly. I've noted this in several others of his books like in the Waylander series, though the story in these was far stronger and could carry these weaker sections. I don't think I'll be listening to any of the others in this series.

Not Too Bad

One of my favourite books from my favourite author, the Lion of Macedon is a great story. Unfortunately, for me - it's spoiled by the narration which I really didn't enjoy. Sean Barrett did a fab job (with the Drenai books) with his voice full of gravitas and (for wont of a better word) oomph.

Peter Kenny just doesn't do that for me and I was glad when the book was done. I'm sure he's great at other styles of story, but I just couldn't connect the two. Download a sample (if you can) before buying.

The narrator killed it

I never thought i could be dissatisfied with a Gemmel book...but this greek series has crushed me. Peter Kenny isnt a bad narrator...but he isn't suited to this series of books. These are greek heroes...warriors...tough hardened men of battle and blood but his narration makes it sound as if they are laying around on lounges and beating each othet with pillows.
