This is a part of a series.

What happens when the past you bury comes back to life?

Hit man-turned-husband Dr. Robert Bryant never imagined that he would fall for his assignment, the beautiful Aubrey Nolan. He thinks he has his life under control, until a woman from his past shows up.

Now, with the new threat, he has to go back to the man that he was to protect, the family that he has grown to love, and hiding who he is in plain sight from the woman he was never supposed to love. Now, he has to be the man he swore he would never be. One last lie on top of them all just might be more than he bargained for.

Family, murder, loyalty, and lies. The Maxwell Series.

Starts Slow but Ends on a High Note

For context, this is my first foray into this genre. A friend recommended this particular book in the series.

Overall, I really enjoyed the story. I did not know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised by how the layers unraveled, each more complex than the last. The ending provided a strong sense of closure and left me a fan. I do have two main pieces of feedback.

My first criticism is that the story starts slow and details are introduced with an air of disorder. This may be purposeful to highlight the juxtaposition of how well the story wraps itself up in the end. However, the reader must wade through with patience first.

My second criticism is with the contrasting qualities of the intimate scenes. Again, this may be purposeful to show the stark difference between the beginning and the end; but to me it felt like two could have been different writers.

I got the version with audio narration and wanted to quickly say that the narration is well done. As it was my first jump into the romantic genre, I worried that a bad narration would influence my immersion. Thankfully, the quality performance actually helped me imagine the tone of the characters and engrossed me further into the story.

GREAT READ!

I enjoyed it. The narration was great. Although this book is pretty quick, it did not lack entertainment. The author did a great job with the character builds and plot. This was my first book by this author but definitely not my last! I look forward to reading more books in this series! I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
