Publisher's Summary

Over a hundred years have passed since a group of violent killers went on the rampage, murdering innocent victims for fun. But even back then, sorcerer Nate Garrett, aka Hellequin, knew there was more to it than simple savage pleasure - souls were being stolen.

Nate's discovery of the souls' use, and of those supporting the group's plan, made him question everything he believed.

Now the group Nate thought long dead is back. Violent, angry, and hell-bent on revenge, they have Hellequin firmly in their sights. And if he won't come willingly, they'll take those closest to him first.

The battle begins again.

The adventures of Nate (Hellequin) continue...

This fifth book in the Hellequin series moves the main, overarching plot forward quite a bit. There are a number of significant developments that take place along the way, and several major situations change in a no-turning-back sort of way. As is typical with this series, the book was riveting from start to end and left me wanting more, yet was also very satisfying at multiple points along the way.

Disclaimer: I received a free, advance copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review.

That being said, I also had it on pre-order for Kindle and Audible, which I'm paying for. It's that good.

Hellequin = Jack Bauer with Magic

So for those of you reading this for the first time the synopsis of the series is, Nate Garrett is a mix of Jack Bauer and Jason Borne with a bit of magic thrown in for good measure. He kicks ass and gets his own ass kicked regularly. This novel is no exception. It is action packed as are all the novels but with this novel I felt like the story didn't move forward overmuch and Nate didn't grow as much as I would have liked, hence the 4 stars instead of 5. I am probably being overly critical here so take that with a grain of salt. In the end, I love this series and will get the next 10 if the story is as good as this one.

Favorite Book in the series thus far

This book was excellent, if you have been following Nate, you'll enjoy this one as it finally answers some questions (and of course raises a few more!). Nate was back on his game in this book and not making as many stupid choices as he did in the previous one. I won't add any spoilers, but if you have enjoyed the series thus far this is worth the credit!

As always, are very enjoyable book.

The author has a certain style of writing that tends to pull me in. Just like the cliche, I found it difficult to put the book down. The narrator completes the experience quite nicely and completely. Mr McHugh and Mr Langton are a very, very good match.

ONE KICK-A$$ SERIES!!!

FINALLY...an author that has created an Urban Fantasy hero with flexible morals that pushes boundaries! Hellequin reminds me of the personalities found in hardened combat Marines, SEALs, and those men that have survived the trials of battlefield justice. He is a cold hearted bastard, but only towards cold hearted bastards. McHugh writes engaging tales of action, daring, mayhem, and magic. Toss in blades and bullets with assassins, paws, claws, & jaws. There is hot chicks, gods, modern warfare, backstabbing buddies, vicious enemies, and awesome storylines that will not let you stop listening or reading.

Disappointing narration

I love Steve McHugh's Hellequin Chronicles, so much so that I upgraded my Kindle books with Audible narration. By this point in the series all the major characters are well developed and he no longer feels the need to throw in sex scenes, relying only on the unfolding story to keep your attention. And I love how he uses his own take on Jack the Ripper as part of Nate's back story. However, I need to express my frustration with the narration. As we have progressed through the series James Langton has decided to change the voices for Tommy and Grayson and oddly goes on to portray a character described a "probably from Newcastle" with a strange Scouse/Irish hybrid accent. Added to that, for the bulk of the book, Erebus becomes Erberus. These are issues that should have been picked up on and ironed out during the recording process and corrected. I can't help but wonder if this has been blamed on the narrator with the change to Simon Mattacks for book 6...

Just the ticket.

These books are some of the best for easy going in both reading terms and listening. I usually end up reading books and the. Getting the audiobook as well as I like to get the full 360 on a story. With some it works and others not so much. But these are some of the best for easy listening. The story has finally started to give us a glimpse into the protagonists life before leaving Marlin and it's really starting to build up to something spectacular. If your looking for something similar to the iron Druid chronicles, or Jim butchers the Dresden files this is just the ticket. Great performance and great story.

Another outstanding Nate adventure

This book is keeping the series going on its excellent run. The story truly pulls you in and keeps enraptured until it ends. The authors ability to describe minor characters (never mind major ones) and have you care for them is an art.
Sometimes by this stage of a series it can become a little ragged but not here there's so much unanswered so much more I want to know. The books seamlessly fit with no plot gaps or issues. Can't wait for the next book from one of my favourite authors.

Another great addition to a fabulous series.

Easy to get enthralled with the characters. Action and wit keep you entertained all the way through and James Langton does a wonderful job.
