Publisher's Summary

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction 2018.

Who says you can't run away from your problems?

Arthur Less is a failed novelist about to turn 50. A wedding invitation arrives in the post: it is from an ex-boyfriend of nine years who is engaged to someone else. Arthur can't say yes - it would be too awkward; he can't say no - it would look like defeat. So, he begins to accept the invitations on his desk to half-baked literary events around the world.

From France to India, Germany to Japan, Arthur almost falls in love, almost falls to his death, and puts miles between him and the plight he refuses to face. Less is a novel about mishaps, misunderstandings and the depths of the human heart.

'Less' is a great read and listen

I loved both the book and the audio book. It is a warm human story about recognisable people. But my husband found it dull - It's doesn't have enough action so I wouldn't recommend it for lovers of action.

Gets better

It took me a while to warm to Arthur Less, but there are some very funny parts which are worth holding out for. Is it a love story? Probably.

A nice book - thats all I can say

I think that being the Pulitzer Prize winner means that you go into this book with very high expectations but I am not sure that it lived up to the, probably, uninvited hype. Don't get me wrong its a nice story about a man named Arthur Less who travels the world to avoid dealing with his ex boyfriends wedding and meets strangers and friends along the way . It is well written, the characters enjoyable and a very good narrator, but I am not sure this book had the impact that I expected it to. Its a nice book, I'm afraid that is all I can say. I didn't laugh, I didn't cry, but I did listen to the whole book through and was left thinking 'yeah that was ok.'

Entertaining and brilliantly performed. V ejoyable

No great story but both moving and amusing with characters cleverly brought to life by an excellent narrator.

Genuine greatness

Wildly funny in places. Also precise and original about the mysteries/miseries of love.
And the audio version holds up very well to the beauty of the text.

My Book Of The Year

Everything, every moment, every word of this book is so beautifully crafted. The narration by Robert Petkoff couldn’t be more perfect. Day after day I would stop reading and quietly reflect on this exquisite work. Usually a greedy reader, I took my time and soaked in every emotional glorious moment.

Narrator was great

Although he used a German accent for a Japanese person. Story was underwhelming and predictable half way through that made me want to jump to the very end. Painfully had to listen to the rest of the book. I won’t be listening to any more books from the same author. Disappointed.

Struggled to finish

The highlight of this whole book was the reference to the Madeleine books when Arthur Less finds himself in Paris, outside an old house covered in vines....

Less is so much more

Every now and then I buy a book I have never heard of, haven’t read reviews of and don’t know the storyline. Less was one of those books. What a delightful experience! Beautifully written, rich in metaphor, wry observation and insight into the human spirit. I loved it all, and I loved the Audible narrator’s reading of it too.

Narrator and novel wonderful

Much has been said about 'Less' - so I will only add to it by saying that the narration was brilliant. I felt like I was in a play or watching a movie so perfectly were the characters given life and realised. Despite myself I found my heart going out to Less and despite myself developed a stake in his life and hope for the outcome. I loved it!

Loved this book

I really loved this book. It's funny, clever, wise and thoroughly enjoyable. It's about love, growing old, accepting that you and your life may end up on some journey you never planned. It's somehow simple yet multi-layered at the same time.

It often uses elegant language with beautiful images and in the next turn, had me laugh out loud. It's made me think again about the value of friends, the importance of sometimes travelling somewhere you wouldn't think to go and most of all, being kind to yourself and others.
