Love this Regency Romance! ❤️

Victoria Hinshaw is a new author to me, and I really enjoyed this story about Kitty, who was scandalized by society because her younger sister eloped the Duke that she was courting.  Kitty and her mother wind up staying with her younger sister, Beatrice and her now husband the Duke while Beatrice is expecting.  Kitty is very outspoken, proper, independent and strong and a character in this story that I loved.  The Duke’s cousin Jack comes to stay with the Duke after he is injured at war and he and Kitty really hit it off.  I loved the part of the story of how Jack and Kitty got to know each other and spent time together and enjoyed each other’s company.  I wish they had more time together and their romance came a little earlier than it did.  June deBorahae is an excellent narrator and this was the first book I heard her narrate.  She was fantastic at both the male and female voices and she made listening to this book amazing!

Great Listen!

This is the second book I've read/listened to by Victoria Hinshaw. She writes well with a great storyline and easy to like characters. Regency isn't a normal trope I read/listen to so I can't comment on the authenticity of the time period. But I love that I'm transported into a time that fascinates me. Or is that frustrates? All the rules of society, gah. I couldn't help wanting to see Jack and Kitty together. It came together a bit quick at the end, but I still enjoyed it.

June deBorahae is an excellent narrator. The audiobook rolled like a movie in my head, both male and female voices being well performed. This was perfection.

Sweet Slow Burn Regency Romance

This is a sweet slow burn Regency Romance. Kitty and Jack are opposites attract, and they are perfect together. The characters are well developed, and interesting. Kitty is beautiful, smart, and strong. Jack is handsome, and enigmatic. The storyline is filled with drama, gossip, and scandal. June deBorahae did an excellent job bringing this story to life. She has a beautiful voice. #PFPAudio

Wonderful Regency Romance

I really enjoyed this regency romance between a woman who is feels embarrassed when the man who had been courting her elopes with her younger sister.
The situations women found themselves in during this and many following years makes a woman now realize how much woman have fought to be independent . Without a man a woman could be left in a situation without a home and forced to rely upon others.
Kitty, the heroine, is strong and also practical…. and when forced to live with her younger sister and her ex intended Kitty begins to form a plan to support herself. Kitty also meets a man, injured in the war, with whom she falls in love.
Questions of duty, what is pursued by pride and seeking glory and finding the duty in a life made with love, which to pursue.
Great narration.

Historically accurate but a slow story

I struggled to finish listening to this novel.  I had quite enjoyed the author’s previous book, “Ask Jane”, and gave it 4 stars.  However, in comparison, the storyline in this book is much slower, more tedious, and has a less interesting setup.  This traditional-style Regency romance takes place at a duke’s country estate early in the Regency period.  It is a sweet romance with just kissing.  I appreciate the historical accuracy and attention to detail by the author.

Kitty, the heroine, and her widowed mother are broke and have to go live with Kitty’s younger sister, who was recently married to a young duke.  Much of the book is focused on dealing with Kitty’s irritating, hypercritical, control-freak mother-in-law. This 45-year-old dowager duchess won’t let her son do any dukely duties and browbeats him incessantly.  This storyline is more tedious than my real life, so the book was not suitable for escapism for me.  Jack is a wounded soldier and the older lady’s nephew, and Kitty grows to like him as they subtly deal with the dowager duchess.  Jack and Kitty are intelligent, likeable, and moral but not vivacious or funny.

I usually listen to audiobooks at 1X, but June deBorahae gives a consistently slow narration, so I had to listen to it at 1.3X.  At that speed, her narration is fine.  Her character voices are fairly distinctive, and she is very good at the Regency-type of dialogue and English accents.  The text doesn’t have much pizzazz, so I can’t fault her for not making the story sound more interesting.

I requested and received a free audio copy, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review. #TheFlockVIPReviewTeam
