Action packed and suspenseful thriller

A computer security conpany in the UK tries to get a lucrative contract in Kuala Lumpur. They end up getting involved with crime gangs putting their lives and those of their families in danger. This was a fast paced, suspenseful and action packed story. It had many twists and dealt with various issues ripe in society today. It was based on a true story and i cant believe how true and real it felt. The detail included was masterful and you can tell the author knows what he was talking about. He described things so well you could actually see them playing out. Elis had a good voice for the story. His accent was perfect, and not over the top like some British accents can tend to become. He had good intonation and narrated fast, in line with the pace of the story. It was a perfect match. I highly recommend this book, it was intriguing, gripping and thoroughly entertaining. Note: This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this objective review voluntarily.

A good little story

I enjoyed the book, however I found every twist and turn on the story entirely predictable, not one real surprise including the ending.

The Dark Net

A British company that designed security for payment on the internet unknowingly makes a pact with devil. When they discover their mistake they are targeted by the leader of the Malaysian underworld. The y use blackmail, murder, and corrupted police officials to sway, unsuccessfully, the techs. There is no down time in this story, it really moves. I was gifted this from the author.

Great detail and interesting outcome

The story-line is great! At first, I thought the verbiage and terminology would be overwhelming and too much out of my knowledge to understand. Fortunately, the author does a great job on explaining every term and what issue and cause and effect needs to occur to help their situation. I didn't get lost at all! The actions that occur are explained in such great detail you get hooked to listen more and more! Truly a great read and enjoyed the characters and the action!

Gripping story, inspired by true events

While there is no real mention on audible of this being inspired by true events. The book’s Amazon page and the authors own webpage makes this very clear. I believe this is important information in making the reader know what to except in terms of realism but also makes everything a bit more exciting. The story starts of with maybe a bit much exposition, but soon gains pace and grabs its audience right to the end. Is a gripping tale set in a fast paced and current setting. It is quite clear that although this is a debut novel, it is not a first draft but a novel that has be worked on and tweeked for years. It is a very impressive debut by Leo James, which I truely enjoyed a lot and highly recommend. Another thing to note is that the narration is absolutely excellent, something which was a pleasent surprise and takes the book to another level. I will definately be looking for future book read by Elis Doyle. *I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Engrossing story

Wow, that story sure had many twists and intrigues and it kept me guessing the whole time. Some part thriller, part high tech novel, with a bit of underground mafia to boot. I was kinda confused at first with all the Malaysian triad codenames and I felt it was a bit confusing at first but once we got into the meat of the story, I really liked it! The whole dark web was kept simple enough that it didn't lose me. I felt the British narrator did an excellent job throughout the whole book. The production actually made it feel like a complete presentation with sound effects added to the voice for context, i.e. someone on the phone would actually be read through a speakerphone. I felt it added to the story. I was given a free copy of the audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Gripping

This is a grab you by the seat of your pants and take you in different directions novel. Many twists and turns and hardly any lulls. The author is very good at setting descriptions such that you feel like you're experiencing what the protagonist is. The narrator is excellent. I didn't expect much from the title when I picked this audio but it was so much more intense and captivating than expected!

Fast paced thriller with slow start

This book was a little slow for the first 90 minutes or so, but after that, it was hard to stop listening. Overall it was very enjoyable. A few things made this audiobook difficult for me. First, there were a lot of characters that I had a difficult time keeping track of. Eventually I had to stop listening and list the characters. The fact that some of the main characters had somewhat similar names did not help (Steve and Dave, Greg and Glen). Perhaps very distinct voices might have helped. Another challenge (and I am not really sure if this was an issue with the writing or the narration) is that book sections ended very abruptly. I would be expecting additional dialog but instead heard the announcement for the next chapter. Other than the abrupt chapter endings, I really liked the narration. However, sound effects like adding echo to identify thoughts from spoken words seemed a little gimmicky. Overall, this audiobook was definitely worth my time, and very enjoyable. Fast paced thriller

My copy was an audiobook narrated by Elis Doyle who does a great job, providing a multitude of different voices for the various characters. His reading is natural and fluent and not “posh, BBC English”. I do wish he’d leave a couple of breaths between scene changes though as he sometimes flows from a scene in Malaysia to a scene in England, or from a board room to a hotel room with no discernable break, making it difficult for a listener to realise that the setting has changed. Otherwise he’s a pleasure to listen to. The story itself is gripping and has lots of details about the settings in Malaysia which help bring the place to life, equally enjoyable for those who have knowledge of the area and for those who, like me, have never travelled. The pace is good and doesn’t slow down from the start, keeping the interest and excitement going right through. It is a very believable tale about the intrigue and deceptions in big business and constantly had me wondering what would happen next, what depths the bad guys would stoop to. The book is very much reliant on dialogue which helps keep the pace going however some of that dialogue can be a little stilted in places and doesn’t always seem natural or believable. In several places a character goes from frantic to calm or from grieving to excited about business prospects in the next sentence. Also, at least in the audiobook version so presumably in the written version too, there appears to be a lack of descriptors for the character’s speech, often making the dialogue seem more flat and emotionless. A little more of how they are saying the words would bring it to life better. Overall a very enjoyable book. All the issues get resolved one way or another but with an opening for a follow up book in the future. I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook from the author and am voluntarily providing an honest review.

Gripping and enjoyable mystery

I really enjoyed Layers of Deception. It had a thoroughly gripping plot which ebbed and flowed like a meandering stream of mystery into an ocean of intrigue and deception. The book’s characters were introduced to us by a superbly expressive narrator who brought them, and indeed the captivating story to life. I highly recommend this audiobook!

Scary Business

With international backers, big business deals and Internet security in the heart of banking systems, you’d never expect everything to go very wrong very quickly. And when things go wrong, they go very wrong! A tale showing one way that the modern-day mafia and dark net combine to corrupt the heart of the international banking system. Enjoy!

A superb thriller, well worth the time!

I rarely take the time to review my purchases on Amazon, but this debut novel is such a page-turner that I felt the need to do so. If you are looking for a cracking international thriller, I really cannot rate this one highly enough, I devoured it in two sittings. I look forward to reading more of Leo James's work.

Nail Biting Thriller

I read the paperback and I've just finished the Audio. Outstanding! This is a grab you by the seat of your pants and take you in different directions book. Many twists and turns and hardly any lulls.
