A lovely book

My first impression of the book was quite wrong. The prologue presaged a story about 30 somethings working in London that didn't appeal. Instead this is a beautifully crafted exploration of the pleasures and pains of love affairs 40 years apart. The two relationships are cleverly intertwined as young journalist, Ellie, investigates a mysterious love letter found in the archives of the newspaper where she works, while at the same time wrestles with her obsessive love of a married man. This is not sugary romantic fiction, but an epic, moving, evocative and memorable book that I highly recommend.
Julia Franklin is an excellent reader.

Good story but didn't enjoy the narration.

Enjoyed the story, it grew on me as it progressed until I completely wasted a half day listening to the last 2-3 hours! However, I hated the narration of the male voices, mainly because their was just one voice for all of the men - making conversations between men difficult to follow. They all (even the modern men) sounded unfeeling, patronising and condescending - that was OK for Laurence, but not for all of the men. Loved the cut glass voice of Jennifer. This is a good story but I would recommend reading rather than listening. It's not nearly as good as 'Me Before You' which I would heartily recommend as an audible book.

Jojo does it again!

Any additional comments?

I thought I may not like this one, but 'Me Before You' and 'The One Plus One' blew me away. Jojo's writing is so imaginative, beautiful and skilled, that I had to give it a try. Its very different to the other two. Its a real old fashioned love story Jojo style. I loved it and will probably read it/listen again. Not something I do often.

Get past first chapter and it's a wonderful 60 s set love story! Deeply moving and involving.

Nearly gave up after the first chapter but then book blossomed into a deeply moving and intriguing love story set in the 60 s and told through a series of love letters. To say any more would give too much away!Beautifully narrated . Highly recommended!

What a lover! What letters! What lives!!!

Spanning 40 years or more this tells a fascinating love story. I had to start listening in the daytime as I wanted to know what happened. There is a lot of sadness but also happiness. I feel this is a must to listen too. Julia Franklin is my favorite narrator as she reads so clearly, words well pronounced, and characters clearly defined in her various voices. It is a book where you are always waiting to see what will happen next. Congratulation Jojo Moyes, now to listen to some of your other books.

A compelling tale

I really enjoyed this story from the start. It was easy to listen to. At first I thought it was going to be rather obvious and predictable but I loved the way the story unfolded over a long time-scale with a few unexpected twists. Highly recommend.

True love can be tough

The story is about the true love, with all the romance and the innoncence that comes with it. It reminds us of our 'old days' - for those who are married. The characters will explore feelings such as tenderness, hope and disappointment.

The narrator is good at expressing all these feelings.

I recommand.

Touching Love Story

I loved this book - a story spanning 40 years using letters and emails to help tell the story. Almost love lost but not quite. I suppose the ending was a bit contrived but I was gripped the whole way through. The story would not work if set in current times but I think it was believable in the time it was set. I also love happy endings!

Different to expectation, somewhat disappointing

Would you try another book written by Jojo Moyes or narrated by Julia Franklin?

I have read several of Jojo Moyes books and enjoyed them all but found this one very different and not as enjoyable. The characters were people who I found to be weak and easily lead by emotion often to the detriment of those around them. This book is said to be the love story of the age and I found it to be anything but that. As a positive it is a book that takes Jojo's style of addressing the unconventional and does that very well. I usually find her characters as friends I'd like to meet up with but not with this book.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Julia Franklin?

Julia's narration was fair but variety in character voice was not as effective when doing male voices. Overall it was a pleasant listen and I would listen to her other work if the opportunity is there.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

No.

Any additional comments?

Overall the story brings to light issues about love that are very grey and make you question the correctness of what the character should do in any particular circumstance. In that way it is a very good read but I personally found the characters made emotionally shortsighted decisions generally at the cost of others and in most situations themselves too. I did not find that to be something I could condone/enjoy and certainly not love story material to me.The only character I found to be principled was Rory.

A Love Story with a Difference

I was enthralled by this story and found it difficult to tear myself away from this audio book.

The story is exciting and the characters believable. My only criticism is that most of the voices for the characters sound similar; most of the male voices are difficult to distinguish and the same goes for the females. However, Julia Franklin's narration is very clear and faultless.

This story would appeal to anyone who likes romantic mystery stories with a difference.

Lovely story

I enjoyed the story. Very typical of Jojo Moyes so if you enjoy her other books you'll like this one.
I always struggle with Julia Franklin 's narrating style unfortunately.

Mmmmm....

Perhaps a little disappointing for JJM. I have been charmed by her earlier books this was much more of a 'true romance' than a 'romantic comedy' one might normally expect. Some interesting twists, the usual overall aspects of loss, but it left me feeling it was rather formulaic. Not one of her best but not bad enough to avoid. A must for many of her true fans. Just didn't work quite so well for me. Can't win them all, can you?

What a great book

I was begging to feel that this would be another disappointment but thankfully I was proved wrong.
It’s starts with the present and then goes back in 1960. The first half of the book centres in the past. I would have liked for the two stories and times to have been running along together rather the disjointed way that it was. The writing was great, story was great. The descriptions of people places and feelings took me there and that’s winning points for the author.
Narration was impeccable with great accents and character voice depth that carried the character.
A few points were predictable from the start of the characters intro and at times the tragedy of life and irony of it all had me yelling while driving and listening to the audiobook.
I really enjoyed it.

predictable story line .

This story line was definitely a bit predictable, with a small twist at the end, but beautifully written.
JoJo Moyes always writes in a believable way and draws you in with her characters. I found this book a bit hard to get into but persevered I'm glad to say.
The narration was quite good but I do think that something is lost when the narrator has to do male and female characters.
it wasn't JoJo's best book but still fairly enjoyable.

One of JoJo Moyes’ best

This story is well written and enthralling. The letters sending readers back in time were used well making it seem effortless and natural.
