From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Giver of Stars and the forthcoming Someone Else's Shoes, a post-WWII story of the war brides who crossed the seas by the thousands to face their unknown futures

1946. World War II has ended and all over the world, young women are beginning to fulfill the promises made to the men they wed in wartime.

In Sydney, Australia, four women join 650 other war brides on an extraordinary voyage to England—aboard HMS Victoria, which still carries not just arms and aircraft but a thousand naval officers. Rules are strictly enforced, from the aircraft carrier’s captain down to the lowliest young deckhand. But the men and the brides will find their lives intertwined despite the Navy’s ironclad sanctions. And for Frances Mackenzie, the complicated young woman whose past comes back to haunt her far from home, the journey will change her life in ways she never could have predicted—forever.

I’ve been trying to find another JoJo Moyes book that would pull me in and I would fall in live with like You Before Me, After You, Still Me, The Girl You Left Behind, but Ship of Brides was a bit meh (like Silver Bay) for me. I hope to return it so I can continue to find another JoJo Moyes book I’ll love and re-listen to over and over.

JoJo fan but this didn’t do it for me

This is a deeply thought provoking story about the idealism of young war brides and their agonizing uncertainty over hastily made marriages vows. It is also about human beings trying to make the best of a difficult overseas passage and both the cruelty and the heroism that are the result. Both skillfully written and masterfully performed, it holds your attention to the last word.

In true Jojo Moyes fashion, The Ship of Brides was a very well written story regarding Australian brides moving to England to meet up with their husbands following the end of WW2. The bulk of the women are quite young and most have only known their husbands for a very brief period of time.

The “girls” as they are referred to, 600 of them, invade a soon to be decommissioned aircraft carrier filled with the usual men aboard for their trip. It will take them six weeks of sometimes heavy seas, always heavy female drama to make the journey.

As expected, there are rivalries, meltdowns, and complicated backstories. The story starts in a bit of a disjointed manner but 400 pages into it, the beginning comes around full-circle, making good and heartwarming sense.

A feel-good novel.

Loved this book! The storyline will keep you engaged the entire time. You will go back in time and feel like you are right there on that ship. The narration is done perfectly. Your heart will ache for some and all that they’re going through during this voyage then rejoice at other times. I found myself cheering Them on then crying w/ them -It leaves you guessing in several situations .. a long book but we’ll worth it!

HOLD ON ! You’re in for a ride!

I’ve really enjoyed all of Jojo Moyes’ books and this was no exception. The narration of an audiobook can make or break the story and this one was done well by Nicolette McKenzie.

Another hit for Jojo

I liked the characters and story but the narration by Nicolette McKenzie was the highlight of listening to this book. Her ability to do so many different accents and make all of the male and female characters sound authentic was amazing. Such exceptional skill! Deserves more than 5 stars.
