Escrita en 1923, en esta obra maestra de Lovecraft el último descendiente de la familia Delapore se muda a la propiedad de sus antepasados en Massachusetts, en el Priorato de Exham, tras la muerte de su único hijo en la Primera Guerra Mundial.
La propiedad se encuentra en un estado ruinoso y Delapore decide restaurarla completamente para consternación de todos los habitantes de la comarca.
