Publisher's summary

Ella no recuerda nada.

Wonderful narrator, gripping whodunnit

I am a student of Spanish who seeks out gripping Audible titles to make listening in Spanish a pleasure. The story needs to be lively and grab my interest.

Rarely do I find a Spanish language Audible title that satisfies both of these two criteria. This one does.

I can't praise the narrator (Soraya Pedro) enough. Her reading was the best part of the experience for me. She's a pro.

Spanish-accent enjoyment is a subjective matter; but, for me, this narrator speaks it as good as I ever want to hear. Her accent sounded like peninsular (Spain) Spanish minus the "ceceo" (something not bad, but which I'm just as happy not to hear) and without any irritating Castilian idiosyncrasies-- my preference.

I wish this narrator had a lot more titles on Audible (she has a small handful)-- you can't get Spanish spoken any better than hers.

Besides her fine accent/pronunciation, she presents the dialogue without story character differentiation, which is always the best idea. Audible books are reading experiences, not theatrical entertainment.

(I wondered at some of the translator's choices. She translates the English word "elevator" as "elevador"-- whereas I've always heard this as as "ascensor" in Spanish speaking countries. Similarly, "type" (as in hitting the keys on a typewriter or keyboard) is usually "teclear." but if I'm hearing this right, she translates it as "tipear"-- an anglicization. "Arrest" she translates as "arrestar." Like "elevator," I think this is a valid translation; however, the translation I'm familiar with is "detener.")

The story is top-notch. It had me on the edge of my seat, which is what you long for, but rarely find, in mystery fiction.

I'd say this author is a great mystery writer-- this story could be made into a smash movie I think.

Even so, I did find one of his plot devices in this tale a bit improbable: I'll only mention that it has something to a club, one that seemed a bit unlikely to me. However, in this world of online Internet forums, who is to say, really, what is plausible and what is not? (The internet itself seems a little unreal.) In any case, granted the existence of this conceit in the story, the reader easily suspends any disbelief about it and enjoys how it succeeds skillfully.

Donlea plays fairly, providing a few red herrings, along with clues enough that when it's revealed whodunnit, he's presented a plausible case for it all along. It's a good plot.

Emocional
