Winner of Lambda Literary Award for Best LGBTQ+ Romance

A Best New Holiday Romance by PopSugar, BuzzFeed, Refinery29, and more!

The author of the “swoon-worthy debut” (Harper’s Bazaar) The Charm Offensive returns with a festive romantic comedy about a woman who fakes an engagement with her landlord…only to fall for his sister.

One year ago, recent Portland transplant Ellie Oliver had her dream job in animation and a Christmas Eve meet-cute with a woman at a bookstore that led her to fall in love over the course of a single night. But after a betrayal the next morning and the loss of her job soon after, she finds herself adrift, alone, and desperate for money.

Finding work at a local coffee shop, she’s just getting through the days—until Andrew, the shop’s landlord, proposes a shocking, drunken plan: a marriage of convenience that will give him his recent inheritance and alleviate Ellie’s financial woes and isolation. They make a plan to spend the holidays together at his family cabin to keep up the ruse. But when Andrew introduces his new fiancée to his sister, Ellie is shocked to discover it’s Jack—the mysterious woman she fell for over the course of one magical Christmas Eve the year before. Now, Ellie must choose between the safety of a fake relationship and the risk of something real.

Perfect for fans of Written in the Stars and One Day in December, Kiss Her Once for Me is the queer holiday rom-com that you’ll want to cozy up with next to the fire.

Critic reviews

"Naudus leans into the novel’s over-the-top silliness, voicing Ellie with a mixture of pent-up hurt and bubbly optimism. Naudus makes the banter between Ellie and Jack sparkle, gives both of Jack’s grandmas unforgettable no-nonsense voices, and delivers the emotional scenes with just enough feeling to make them seem real."AudioFile Magazine

Just bad

Somewhere between 1-2 stars rounded down. I normally get a holiday romance to purposefully feel the hallmark so-bad-it’s-good vibe. This book was just awful. The main character has no personality outside of stuttering and saying she has anxiety. Andrew’s character is extremely inconsistent. Jack’s only personality trait is having a husky voice and being honest. The dialogue is so cringey I had to take breaks. The pacing is weird. All conversations involve everyone immediately telling the main character everything about themselves and the main character stuttering a non-reply while thinking about their anxiety. The most unlikeable character is the main one. I think what really adds to her unlikeableness is the fact that she’s so whiny and unhappy for no reason. The book gives a half-assed explanation of why she needs money and how dreamy Andrew is and then when a life-changing amount of money unbelievably falls into her lap she’s upset or complaining or trying to leave. Or when Andrew asks her on a date she’s upset and being short with him or stuttering out non-responses. Like it makes no sense to me. The descriptions are just terrible, “half-moon smile”, “her eyes are brown like coffee”, etc. Found family is even one of my favorite tropes but this was just so bad. I was going to hate finish but after about a third of the way through the book just starts repeating itself so I’m probably done with it here.

Heartwarming!

I could definitely see this as a movie on the Hallmark Channel! Great dialogue and the narrator did a fantastic job. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this one!

Decent listen

As a person with GAD initially I was triggered by the main characters spirals, but I (sadly, annoyingly?) saw myself in them. It was okay after a while.

I liked the diversity of characters and imagined Andrew as a Charles Melton looking guy and Jack, maybe nothing I could really pinpoint. Maybe Kristin Kish-esque?

Overall the story was fine, I do enjoy listening to it. I like the Narrators voice and thinks she does many characters well, but making Jack sound masculine and the exaggerated male voices for Andrew and others felt overblown after a while. Maybe having separate narrators for distinct characters would make it better. With 2 hours left it feels like I’m removed from the story when Jack talks, especially during the more intimate scenes.

I wouldn’t listen to this again, but I’m glad I gave it a chance.

Absolutely angst and joy!

I loved this book! I don’t know if I’ve ever felt so much angst for two character to find happiness! I related so much to both of them in different ways as they both had some healing to do! I cried tears of joy at the end. My heart yearned and I swooned with them!

masterfully beautiful

romance books are not my typical book that I listen to or read often. occasionally, I'll cave and read/listen to one. this one was so full of emotion I found myself feeling all of ot from start to finish. I cried, I laughed, I got angry. all of it through the entire book. I loved it.

Cute!

So happy to have another sapphic book to listen to! Just moved away from Portland and it was so nice to feel like I was back in it! Miss my queer community — this book was perfect for me right now. Love the narrator too—I’m on the hunt to listen to everything they narrate.

Dull. Meek.

The author relies too heavily on similes to stress the importance of emotional scenes. SO MANY SIMILES! The romance was dull. The sex was boring. The main character was so meek, naive and stupid that I didn’t care about her at all. And how do you not include the fiancé more in the family week?! This was just a hard pass for me.

I laughed, I cried.

Simply perfect narration of this lovely twisty funny story. This character and I are cut from the same chaos-bi cloth. Now. Where to find my Jack…?

Read it..

So it started out with me wanting to kick the main character into reality. It’s like she’s this people pleasing person..somewhat spineless. I caught myself sooo annoyed I almost stop listening. But the story did get way better..I found myself rooting for her love in the end and questioning how I’m still single lol. The narrative was good too keeping the charm in all the characters. Ultimately I say a good read. I was sad when it ended.
