Publisher's Summary

The wrongful conviction of an innocent death row inmate and his fight for exoneration

In 1984, John Thompson was convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of a prominent white man in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was sent to Angola Prison and confined to his cell for 23 hours a day. However, Thompson adamantly proclaimed his innocence and just needed lawyers who believed that his trial had been mishandled and would step up to the plate against the powerful DA’s office. But who would fight for Thompson’s innocence when he didn’t have an alibi for the night of the murder and there were two key witnesses to confirm his guilt?

Killing Time is about the 18-year quest for Thompson’s freedom from a wrongful murder conviction. After Philadelphia lawyers Michael Banks and Gordon Cooney take on his case, they struggle to find areas of misconduct in his previous trials while grappling with their questions about Thompson’s innocence. John Hollway and Ronald M. Gauthier have interviewed Thompson and the lawyers, and paint a realistic and compelling portrait of life on death row and the corruption in the Louisiana police and DA’s office. When it is found that evidence was mishandled in a previous trial that led to his death sentence in the murder case, Thompson is finally on his road to freedom - a journey that continues with his suit against Harry Connick, Sr. and the New Orleans DA’s office to this day.

Writing was pretty good, narrator was horrible

I had a horrible time staying focused on this story - have stopped and restarted several times. It hasnt been the writing, but the narrator was so flat and unconvincing. Horrible narration. Get the regular book, dont bother with the audible version. I likely will never finish listening to this audible version and will have to actually read it - bummer, I just hope other authors dont get this guy to read their books for them.

Good listen, good story

You were pulling for the subject of this book from right after the start. A very good listen, an awful lot for the guy to go through in his life but sadly he is not the only one.

At times a little slow, but put together very well

I found this to be very interesting, at times I got upset at the injustice that was done to this man. All they wanted was someone to pin it on and they made this poor man a scapegoat. I thought the author did a great job laying out the story with little filler. Filled with facts but at the same time it was done in a way that it was easy to understand and not a lot of courtroom text.

I thought the narrator did a great job laying out the story, giving good character voices, with no background noise, no repeating of words and no volume changes. If any breaks were taken I could not tell. I thought he gave true emotions as he draws the listener in. He has a very pleasant voice that is easy to listen to. I really enjoyed this audio.

I thought it was sad and injustice that the man got no money and had to start over. It is a shame they didn't even give him money to live on. I could understand this if he was guilty but he was not. After looking into this he won the law suit but it was over turner and he got nothing for all those years in jail. Sad very sad.

Very unfortunate

I always thought our judicial system was good, but power and pride ruins innocent peoples lives! And the thing is they don’t care! Thanks to John’s lawyers they stuck with him! Plus I believe God was involved in his defense

Gripping and enjoyable.

This is the first time I've felt I must enter a comment on a book. I know it's a true story but it is so well constructed, written and narrated I found it totally absorbing and impossible too turn off. I would highly recommend this book.

Gripping story with a happy ending!

I only started listening to this because the reviews looked so good...so glad I did! This is a fascinating story which is told in such a way that it captures your interest from the first moment, & keeps you gripped to the end. A long but compelling read! Highly Recommend!

I would have gladly paid a credit for this book. Very long, but plenty of hooks and I never felt like giving up. I would definitely read other works by these authors. Narrator was excellent!

Incredible

of all the many many books I've purchased from bestsellers charts, podcasts from top ten lists, none have come close to this in terms of storytelling. Absolutely enthralling. However, if you're likely to be bored of law jargon then this might not be you. I am and so was captivated by this court room drama. knowing it to be a true story made the whole experience thoroughly enjoyable
