Publisher's summary

An Astra Militarum Novel.

An elite squad of Cadian Kasrkin are tasked with a critical mission behind enemy lines. They must rescue their general in xenos-held territory before his dangerous knowledge falls into enemy hands. But not all is as it seems....

Listen to it because....

Hear the legendary elite soldiers of Cadia in action as they take on a mission so dangerous it could only be trusted to troops with their training and equipment.

The story:

When the perfidious t’au bring down a valkyrie containing an Astra Militarum general on the besieged Imperial world of Dasht i-Kevar, all could be lost—what the general knows could break the war effort, and see the planet fall under the control of the vile xenos.

Only the Kasrkin stand a chance at bringing him back. They are the elite of the elite, but the enemy that Captain Bharath Obeysekera and his squad are called upon to fight is unlike any they have faced before—the desert itself, endless and implacable.

With sandstorms cutting them off from support, Obeysekera has only his soldiers to rely on. As the Kasrkin journey deeper into the wastes, they begin to realise they’re not the only hunters searching for the missing general, and that their war has caught the attention of something ancient lurking beneath the desert sands…

The Characters, plot twist, and theme

Got confusing near the end and lost track of some characters. And some parts feel rushed.

Interesting twists in character development.

I loved the interplay between the characters and their motivations. I just wish it was a little bit longer.

Amazing characters!

A certain someone and his sandcastles had me in stitches! Loved the humanizing element of the squad and the character growth! 10/10

Damn good book

Ridiculously good for a 40k book, author earned his paycheck twice over. Hidden gem in my opinion.

A joy ride turned deadly

I really enjoyed this book. A look into the more special ops side of the Astra militarum. solid narration and storytelling kept me gripped all the way until the end. some cutscenes of some slower events helped to alleviate the fast pace at times, and add different parallels to the story. all in all a solid 8.5/10

A solid character drama with intrigue

First off, maybe don't reveal major plot points and twists in a review, even if you didn't like the book. Second, to those complaining about the troopers not being stoic badass professionals, the primarchs are petty and shortsighted, because reading and writing about characters without flaws is super boring.

As to the review, I thought it started a bit dry, but ended really solid. The voice acting was good enough that I never got confused who was speaking. the content touched on several points of the lore that I was not expecting so that was a bonus.

if you like flawed characters, some tropes(if not, whyre you even reading), and intrigue that's actually not super obvious, I recommend.

A different take on the IG / AM

I enjoyed this different look into the Astra Militarum / Imperial Guard. I liked the little twist at the end, and was really thrown aback a bit with the ending.
