Publisher's Summary

Carla Neggers' sizzling novels are loved for their deliciously funny dialogue, electrifying suspense, and heart-stopping romance. Here, the New York Times bestselling author presents a fast-paced, scintillating tale of love, art, and danger....

Annie Payne realizes her dream when she moves to San Francisco and opens an art gallery. But when she accepts a secret commission to bid for a painting going on the auction block, she finds herself thrown into a haunting swirl of events linked to a five-year-old unsolved murder. Who is this secret client?

Marina owner Garvin MacCrae was determined to have the portrait of his late wife, and knows of only one person who would want it enough to outbid him. Could the intriguing art dealer who represented the auction winner hold the key to the mystery of his wife's death? Working together to untangle a murderer's clues, Garvin and Annie strike so many sparks off each other that they could start another San Francisco fire - a four-alarmer fueled by an explosive mix of suspicion, attraction, and love.

Enjoyed the story but had a problem

This was an enjoyable story but I had a major problem with the pronunciation of the county just north of San Francisco in California, Marin I lived there and always heard it pronounced merin ( /məˈrɪn/) in the story it was always pronounced MArin. Nothing ruins a story faster than having words (or places) mispronounced.

Narrator-meh

Don’t your producers/directors coach narrators how to pronounce local words and names?? “Marin” is not pronounced “mare-in”. It’s pronounced “muh-rin”. Totally ruins the book when you don’t take the effort to get it right. It’s an insult to the author too.

Love, mystery and a lovable dog

In some ways I am surprised that the author was able to draw out this story into a several hundred page book. I did however enjoy the characters, the love stories, the mystery and the ending.

This is a book/story for Harlequins Romance books

This is about people who meet and fall in love over a short period of time. Very little about the double murders crime.

Narrator distraction

Narrator uses many voices for same person. Hard to know who is talking. Storyline tends to rehash, like the reader missed something and needs to be retold frequently.

Not my first book by Carla Neggers

while the story was enjoyable, the author repeated many of the characters key story points too many times throughout the book.

I just couldn't finish it

I hate quitting a book early, but between the narrators lack of change when she voiced the different characters and the poorly written story, I just couldn't finish.

Pretty good

I'm not really sure what to say about this book. It was pretty good, a sort of Goldilocks book: as in, not too bad, not too good: perfectly readable, if somewhat forgettable. It has a dated feel, and I wasn't at all surprised to learn it was written in the 1990s as it had an almost innocent naivete that is more rare these days.

The main character, Anna, moved to San Francisco on a whim after her childhood home was literally washed into the sea. She used her insurance money to buy an art studio and a small apartment she shares with her Rottweiler, Otto. In the hopes of securing the sole rights to show a hitherto unknown, but extremely talented artist's work at her gallery, she commits to purchasing a certain painting in an auction for the artist. Little does Anna know, but the painting is of an murdered heiress, whose murderer has yet to be found, and Anna must bid against the widowered husband, Garvin, for the painting. Anna unwittingly steps into the center of the mystery of the unsolved crime, and into the sights of not only Garvin, but also the murderer.

The plot was interesting, if a bit formulaic and predictable. The characters reminded me of some long-cancelled soap opera or a Lifetime movie. None of the characters particularly stood out to me except maybe Otto, who is left in the car in California sometimes for hours at a time (that bugged me). In fact, a lot of the story concerning the dog bugged me. I won't nitpick, but as a reader who will walk away from any romance read where an animal is killed or harmed for "shock value" I will say that I almost -- but ultimately did not -- walk away from this book at one point.

All in all it was just an 'OK' book. The narrator was ok. The story was ok. The romance ok.

Predictable story- Bad Performance

Hard to tell if the Story was just too wordy in the way it was written, or if it was so hard to listen to because the person reciting did such a poor job.The crisp annunciations of just about every word and monotonous tone made it really hard to feel or detect any warmth for the characters. The authors style lacked any real finesse for character development… The reader was told about the characters, repeatedly, rather than having their words and actions show who they were. It was just about impossible to get “attached“ to any of the characters.… The one exception to this is the bad boy /business partner at the marina.... His character came through and you couldn’t help but like him. The rest were lifeless and unremarkable ... slogging through a predictable storyline. I won’t be reading any more of this authors books and I will stay away from books read by this performer.

Not my usual choice

I wasn't sure if I'd like this novel as I don't normally go for this type of novel. It was OK. I found it a little slow in areas which I realise was the authors way to build suspense. I grew frustrated with the characters. But it was an enjoyable listen.

I found the narrator ok. At times the voices seemed to merge into one and I found it difficult to know which character was talking.

Not as good as it could have been

The storyline was original and had intrigue, but the narrators were totally flat! Just didn’t bring personality or enthusiasm to the characters. Had to make myself stick with it, not as good as her previous books. Glad it was an inclusive and didn’t buy separately!

Romance and a little mystery

An enjoyable enough story which engages to the end but … unfortunately I guessed the bad guy fairly early on!
Not a 5* read but ok!

Entertaining but predictable

Some very engaging elements to this story and Carla Neggers paints really excellent word pictures.
