Publisher's Summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of Pay It Forward comes an uplifting and poignant novel about friendship, trust, and facing your fears.

No longer tolerating her husband’s borderline abuse, Faith escapes to her parents’ California beach house to plan her next move. She never dreamed her new chapter would involve befriending Sarah, a fourteen-year-old on the run from her father and reeling from her mother’s sudden and suspicious death.

While Sarah’s grandmother scrambles to get custody, Faith is charged with spiriting the girl away on a journey that will restore her hope: Sarah implores Faith to take her to Falkner’s Midnight Sun, the prized black mare that her father sold out from under her. Sarah shares an unbreakable bond with Midnight and can’t bear to be apart from her. Throughout the sweltering summer, as they follow Midnight from show to show, Sarah comes to terms with what she witnessed on the terrible night her mother died.

But the journey is far from over. Faith must learn the value of trusting her instincts - and realize that the key to her future, and Sarah’s, is in her hands.

Soooo boring

I have listened to many books by this author, and this is the first really bad one I’ve heard. Moreover, the narrator shows very little emotion in all the characters she performs.
I kept listening thinking (hoping) there would be a turn in the plot. Unfortunately, there was not. Actually, there was no plot at all...just mundane chatter among the characters.

Very enjoyable

As a horse lover, I was able to relate to young Sarah whose horse was sold out from under her due to her mothers death and father’s addiction. Story was well written especially as the relationships between girl and horse and girl and empathetic neighbor developed. Great book especially for a teen or anyone who understands how trusting and loyal an animal can be. Happy reading!

Boring, idle chatter, no substance to it.

Boring. One dimensional characters. Chatter, chatter, chatter. I skipped a few chapters and still same chatter, chatter, chatter. So different than her other books.

Enjoyed it although a little far-fetched

I enjoyed the story but found it somewhat unbelievable. Still a good listen. More horse details than I would have liked. Enjoyed the narrator's performance.

Great for horse lovers

I listened to this book shortly after losing my 33 year old mare, my 'dream horse' I bought when she was 18 months old. The lovely story brought back wonderful memories. The book is well written with accurate details of horses and dressage. The strong female characters are interesting. Highly recommend to horse lovers!

Poor reading performance

Couldn't get into the book because the reader/performer was so bland. I have enjoyed other books by this same author but not this one.

Narration weakens the book

I almost gave up on this story because the narration was so bad in some places. It is very odd because most of the characters are fine but Sarah and Faith have often very stilted and unnatural speaking. The narrator sounds like she is trying to over-enunciate the words when she is in Faith's character and Sarah sounds like someone who very quickly reading lines with no emotion. But other characters were fine. It was just very odd. The story itself was pretty good but sometimes the language was a bit formulaic and drew attention to itself. I stuck with the book because I just needed a book to fill time and I liked Catherine's other books, but I have to say I was disappointed in this one. Maybe I would have rated it higher if I had read the paperback, but the audio kind of kills this one.

Good Story

This book is a good story, but in my opinion almost qualifies for young adult readers. What struck me most is how the author portrayed the love between Sarah and her horse Midnight. You could just feel the the love. I personally did not care for the way Sarah was portrayed in the end, but that's just an opinion. This is a good fast read. Enjoy!
I have listened to all of Catherine Ryan Hyde's books and she one of my favorite authors. You know when you listen to her books you are going to feel deeply what her characters feel and go through what they go through with them.
