Resumen del Editor

On an isolated Texas ranch, Dr. Lucy cares for abandoned animals. The solitude allows her to avoid the people and places that remind her of the past. Not that any of the townsfolk care. In 1959, no one is interested in a woman doctor. Nor are they welcoming Calvin and Justin Bell, a newly arrived African American father and son.

When Pete Solomon, a neglected twelve-year-old boy, and Justin bring a wounded wolf-dog hybrid to Dr. Lucy, the outcasts soon find refuge in one another. Lucy never thought she'd make connections again, never mind fall in love. Pete never imagined he'd find friends as loyal as Justin and the dog. But these four people aren't allowed to be friends, much less a family, when the whole town turns violently against them.

With heavy hearts, Dr. Lucy and Pete say goodbye to Calvin and Justin. But through the years they keep hope alive...waiting for the world to catch up with them.

worth the credit

overall worth the time/credit
male narrator does a VERY annoying voice for the female character (sigh)

I work in foster care and adoption and will seriously consider using parts of the narration in training classes for Caregivers.

Great Book - Narrator Not So Great

The book and the story line was good. I have loved all of the Catherine Ryan Hyde books I have read. I did not enjoy the male narrator. His female voice was terrible. If you are going to have a male and a female narrator, they should each read for the appropriate sex. It would have sounded better if they just had one person that read all parts because the accents were off with two readers.

So timely yet set in the 50’s

I loved this book from the beginning - suspenseful, heartbreaking, anger, joy - all of the emotions. A great read!

Loved this book about mixed race relationships

This book is about a white woman in the late 1950's who falls in love with an African American man. She lived in a small Texas town which didn't approve of this. They were forced to separate for a bit. The narrator did a fine job. The story kept my interest. I liked the ending. This was well worth one credit.

Bravo!

I started this book believing it would end sad .
As Pete’s story evolved from childhood to adolescent then on to adulthood I was amazed by such a remarkable story.
The other people in this book were also captivating, their stories equally as well told.
If you want a read that will make you smile as well as have hope in the world, this book has it all.

Favorite author

Catherine Ryan Hyde is my favorite contemporary author. The characters she creates are people I love to have in my life, and through her books I do for a time. The characters often are abandoned children either physically or emotionally and yet they chose the right path. Or they are the person who chooses to help the child that is no relation to them and often having to face difficulty they would not otherwise face because of the child or the child’s circumstances. They are people who do the right thing when the wrong thing would be much easier to do. She writes in a way that makes these people real and believable. I like all of her books and would have difficulty choosing a favorite as they all deal with life issues and offer soul searching.
