Hard, but good read

the content angered me but the story was so good I had to see it through til the end. The narrator was excellent in her ability to differentiate the characters.

Great Read

My favorite part is the main character having to choose between husband #1 who was very W.E.B. DuBois and husband #2 who was very Booker T Washington. I love the way they allowed her to choose and in doing so the husbands developed a mutual respect for each other.

Good novel.

An in-depth look at slavery during the civil war era. A sad situation for our ancestors.

Compelling story

Thoroughly enjoyed this story of freedom and its disappointments in the reconstruction era South. I will recommend this novel to others.

Well developed story and characters including the main protagonist.

I wanted the story to keep going to find out how the lives of the characters progressed. I guess since this is based on a true story, perhaps more might be more written one day.

I didn't want this story to end...

I really enjoyed this story; in fact, I felt as if I were a part of the story at times. I believe this is because of the attention to detail Ms. Walker incorporates (which is nothing short of amazing). The narrator is also quite good, and this can 'make or break' an audio book sometimes. All in all this was a wonderful audio book experience!
