The Queen of Exiles is Marie-Louise Christophe, wife and then widow of Henry I, who ruled over the newly liberated Kingdom of Hayti in the wake of the brutal Haitian Revolution. In 1810 Louise is crowned queen as her husband begins his reign over the first and only free Black nation in the Western Hemisphere. But despite their newfound freedom, Haitians still struggle under mountains of debt to France and indifference from former allies in Britain and the new United States. Thus begins an intense relationship that will shape both of their lives for decades to come. Though Lisbeth leads a life of privilege, she finds nothing but loneliness in the company of her overwhelmed mother and her distant, slave-owning father.

Historia
A Woman of Endurance, set in nineteenth-century Puerto Rican plantation society, follows Pola, a deeply spiritual African woman who is captured and later sold for the purpose of breeding future slaves. The resulting babies are taken from her as soon as they are born. Pola loses the faith that has guided her and becomes embittered and defensive. The dehumanizing violence of her life almost destroys her. But this is not a novel of defeat but rather one of survival, regeneration, and reclamation of common humanity.

Resumen del Editor
“Richly detailed, vividly depicted, and sweeping in scope, Island Queen is historical fiction at its absolute finest. A stunning must-read!” (Chanel Cleeton, New York Times best-selling author of The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba)
A remarkable, sweeping historical novel based on the incredible true life story of Dorothy Kirwan Thomas, a free woman of color who rose from slavery to become one of the wealthiest and most powerful landowners in the colonial West Indies.
Born into slavery on the tiny Caribbean island of Montserrat, Doll bought her freedom—and that of her sister and her mother—from her Irish planter father and built a legacy of wealth and power as an entrepreneur, merchant, hotelier, and planter that extended from the marketplaces and sugar plantations of Dominica and Barbados to a glittering luxury hotel in Demerara on the South American continent.
Vanessa Riley’s novel brings Doll to vivid life as she rises above the harsh realities of slavery and colonialism by working the system and leveraging the competing attentions of the men in her life: a restless shipping merchant, Joseph Thomas; a wealthy planter hiding a secret, John Coseveldt Cells; and a roguish naval captain who will later become King William IV of England.
From the bustling port cities of the West Indies to the forbidding drawing rooms of London’s elite, Island Queen is a sweeping epic of an adventurer and a survivor who answered to no one but herself as she rose to power and autonomy against all odds, defying rigid 18th-century morality and the oppression of women as well as people of color. It is an unforgettable portrait of a true larger-than-life woman who made her mark on history.

In 1804, shortly before the Caribbean island of Saint Domingue is renamed Haiti, a group of women gather to bury a stillborn baby. Led by a lesbian healer and midwife named Mer, the women's lamentations inadvertently release the dead infant's "unused vitality" to draw Ezili - the Afro-Caribbean goddess of sexual desire and love - into the physical world. As Ezili explores her newfound powers, she travels across time and space to inhabit the midwife's body - as well as those of Jeanne, a mixed-race dancer and the mistress of Charles Baudelaire living in 1880s Paris, and Meritet.

Harriet Ann Jacob's autobiography documents her life as a slave and how she attained freedom for herself and her children. Harrowing in its descriptions of sexual abuse, Jacob's slave narrative is notable for the appeal it made to abolitionist women to open their eyes to the realities of slavery. Deemed too shocking for reading audiences at the time, the book was shelved before it was published in 1861 near the start of the Civil War.

Conjure Women is a sweeping story that brings the world of the South before and after the Civil War vividly to life. Spanning eras and generations, it tells of the lives of three unforgettable women: Miss May Belle, a wise healing woman; her precocious and observant daughter, Rue, who is reluctant to follow in her mother’s footsteps as a midwife; and their master’s daughter, Varina. Island Queen
A beautifully written story about extreme hardship/violence, infinite courage & one woman of color’s determination to battle injustice & fight against the enslavement & torture of others by gaining riches for the rich & powerful. Once I began reading, this book was hard to put down. Although this story takes place in the 1700’s, sadly discrimination against race, religious/political beliefs, social status, etc. is shamefully alive & well as we are entering into 2022.

Utterly fantastic
I checked, this makes book 371 I've listened to on audible, but it is hands down the BEST narration I've ever heard. Ever. The story was also great, but this narrator made it. I read it too, but hearing it from this truly gifted storyteller made it come to life! I would listen to her read the phone book!

Amazing
Being a black woman from the West Indies this book was amazing. This book took me through so many emotions. I felt pain, anger, hope, joy and sadness. Very well read. Her triumphs and tribulations shows that woman can overcome anything.

Truly amazing story
One of my favorite books of all time. I will hold this one in my heart for a long time. And the narrator did such an amazing job with the accents and characters. So well done.

Beautiful story!! Must read/ listen!
I didn't realize this was a true story until about half way through. I downloaded this book because of the title about a month before I started listening to it. About half way through, I took time to look up who this Island Queen was in real life. Her story made me angry at times, sad, and even happy. I'm glad Vanessa Riley introduced me to a piece of Caribbean history and a remarkable woman that I was clueless about. Her life achievements are astounding and inspiring. Must read!

Fabulous Narration!!!
I felt like I was taken back in time to a carribbean island during the late 1700's. Loved it! Adjoa did an excellent job with the narration. The audio of the book is a must. The audio adds so much depth to the novel.
