Publisher's Summary

Most people are unaware that Mark Twain spent over a decade researching Saint Joan of Arc and wrote what he considered to be his greatest work - Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc - originally published in Harper's Magazine in 1895 as chapters attributed to the fictitious author Sieur Louis de Conte.

When the public found out that Twain was actually the author, many were suspicious, thinking Twain was perpetrating some kind of a joke. Twain's biographer Albert Paine defends Twain saying it is actually his greatest writing: "Considered from every point of view, Joan of Arc is Mark Twain's supreme literary expression, the loftiest, the most delicate, the most luminous example of his work."

Narrator is just not right

Well, I made it an hour and a half into the book and wanted to love it but the narrator was just not the right fit. I tried to stick with it but it was just too bad.
However, the story seems to be a winner. I removed this version from my library and bought a version narrated by Robin Field. Fingers crossed!

Awful narrator, great story.

I got about half way through before I had to stop
Because the narrator was so irritating. I ordered the book from the library. Story is well written and beautiful but was being butchered.

Great Book to Read

Love this story. The narrator is difficult to stick with. He’s trying really hard. Probably won’t finish this version.

Twain humor & wit

Undeniably a Mark Twain creation, the telling of Joan of Arc in this voice is beautiful and deeply touching, peppered with much dry and clever observations of human spirit. Humanity is a deeply troubled vice and Twain shows it so.

amazing story HORRIBLE narrator

I could not even get past chapter three. the narrator sounds like if Mickey Mouse and an encyclopedia had a baby, who tried to narrate a book. It was not possible to listen to this book with this narrator. I'll be trying another to finish this book.

Thoughtfully narrated. Perhaps the most incredible true story I have ever heard. Twains humor is a nice touch.

history written for a 10 year old

written in Twain's tongue in cheek, child's humor, factual but 95% is given in a nonsensical way

Captivating but emotional

It took a wee while for me to get into this book. The narrator's voice was a little of putting to begin with and the very early years of joans life not of much interest to me. However, once the story progressed i was drawn in. I loved Mark Twains portrayal of Joan and was impressed throughout but emotional at the end.
