Publisher's Summary

Do you know what the hardest thing for a Japanese learner is? Finding proper material that they can handle…which is precisely the reason we’ve written this book!

You may have found the best teacher in town or the most incredible learning app around, but if you don’t put all of that knowledge to practice, you’ll soon forget everything you’ve obtained. This is why being engaged with interesting learning material can be so essential for somebody wishing to learn a new language.

Therefore, in this book we have compiled 20 easy-to-follow, compelling, and fun stories that will allow you to expand your vocabulary and give you the tools to improve your grasp of the wonderful Japanese language.

How Japanese Short Stories for Beginners works:

  • Each chapter possesses a funny, interesting, and/or thought-provoking story based on real-life situations, allowing you to learn a bit more about the Japanese culture.
  • Having trouble understanding Japanese characters? No problem – we provide you with the English translation after each paragraph, allowing you to fully grasp what you’re listening to!
  • The summaries follow a synopsis in Japanese and in English of what you just heard, both to review the lesson and for you to see if you understood what the tale was about. Use them if you’re having trouble.
  • At the end of those summaries, you will be provided with a list of the most relevant vocabulary from that chapter, as well as slang and sayings that you may not have understood at first glance! Do not get lost trying to understand or pronounce it all, either!
  • Finally, you’ll be provided with a set of tricky questions in Japanese, allowing you the chance to prove that you learned something in the story. Whether it’s true or false, or if you’re doing the single answer questions, don’t worry if you don’t know the answer to any — we will provide them immediately after, but no cheating!

We want you to feel comfortable while learning Japanese; after all, no language should be a barrier for you to travel around the world and expand your social circles!

Very useful for increasing Japanese vocabulary

I have listened to the material twice, accompanied by the PDF available with it. It was recommended by a close friend and I realized that short stories are an excellent resource for learning Japanese vocabulary. In the first contact with the audiobook I was a little intimidated and I thought it wouldn't be for me, but it didn't take long to become familiar with the structure in the stories. If you are thinking of increasing your Japanese vocabulary outside of repetitive manuals, I recommend this tool. It is an A plus!

Easy and pleasant stories

This is a great audiobook for new learners, and even better for students with already some experience with the Japanese language. I’ve always had trouble with speaking and hearing it, but the stories were easy to follow along, and the questions after each one helped with comprehension.

It is more accessible and refreshing to practice with the accompanying PDF. I found that listening to each story once, and then listening to it again while reading the text was great to expand vocabulary.

Overall, I recommend this book as an amusing way to improve understanding.

Awesome!

I have not finished the whole audiobook, but this is exactly what I’ve been looking for. The pdf is very helpful to follow along with or without English as you wish.

The best beginner story book

This is my favourite story book so far. The stories are realistic, interesting, and diverse. I learned so much new vocab!
Reading is performed very well - slow paced (but not overly slow), clear pronunciation, vocab list after each lesson.
I bought it for listening in the car - and it was perfect for that.
P.S. the level is not Complete beginner, though. I would say it's about A2 at least.

Just as it should be

Great narrator and the structure of the book (and the stories) are well designed for a beginner like myself. Highly recommended!

Didactic and enjoyable

I have to say that listening to short stories like these is a different and enjoyable way to get in touch with another language. The audiobook structure (with both Japanese and English versions) is something to highlight as an extremely didactic tool, especially when combined with the pdf material provided. I would sincerely recommend this audiobook, preferably for those who have basic knowledge of the Japanese language.

Excellent resource

This audiobook is just what I needed to improve my Japanese. The stories are a little……simple, but they certainly provide lots of useful vocabulary and grammar examples for me to practice. As a listening exercise this book has been brilliant.

I wouldn't recommend this audiobook.

The narrator's voice was monotonous and made it hard to stay interested in the stories. The lack of emotion and enthusiasm made for a boring experience."

Disappointing

The stories were not engaging and felt like they were made for children. I was expecting more depth and complexity but was let down by the simplistic language used.
