Nikko had long been a sacred place for mountain worship but after Toshogu Shrine was built, it became a sacred place for the Edo shogunate. 江戸幕府を開いた徳川家康は、「自分は神となって日本を守ろう」と言い残し、没しました。その家康を神として祀るのが、栃木県の日光東照宮です。
日光は、古くから山岳信仰の聖地でしたが、東照宮の創建後は江戸幕府の聖地となりました。
創建時は小さな神社だった東照宮は、家康の孫である家光が3代将軍となった時代に、現在のような絢爛な姿になりました。
東照宮のほか、二荒山神社、輪王寺の3つが、「日光の社寺」の名で世界遺産に登録されています。
建造物と自然の調和が、日本古来の神道思想を表している点が重要とされました。
