My Dream of Heaven

Rebecca Ruter Springer was 29 when the American Civil War started in 1861. When the war ended five years later, 620,000 soldiers and countless civilians lay dead. It is not surprising, therefore, that the dead and heaven were much considered over the next 40 years in the USA. And it was this spiritual climate that created Springer's classic, Intra Muros, or as it is now generally known, My Dream of Heaven.

Rebecca was born in 1832, in Indianapolis, Indiana, the daughter of a Methodist clergyman; she graduated from the Wesleyan Female College in 1850, and Methodist Christianity remained her spiritual home. In 1859, two years before the Civil War, she married William Springer, who went on to become a lawyer and member of the Illinois General Assembly. They had one son, also called William, but Rebecca's health was never good; she was described by one person as 'feeble'. In 1868 the couple went on a two-year European tour to improve her health, but it remained poor until her death. It was amidst ill health that her classic work was born.

Intra Muros ('Between the Walls'), or My Dream of Heaven, was written in 1898. It was a vision given to her during severe illness, and she was unconscious for some days as she received the vision - which in the telling, covers a period of years. On reflection, she came to understand the short book as a series of basic truths about heaven, offering readers both confidence that God had prepared a place for them and that awaiting them there was a wonderful reunion with loved ones who had gone before.

Springer did not bestow the status of 'prophecy' on her work; but rather intended it as comfort. As she said, she wrote the book with 'the hope that it may comfort and uplift some who read, even as it did, and as its memory will ever do, for me. I submit the imperfect sketch of a most perfect vision.'

Inspiring, encouraging, much like a C.S. Lewis fiction with a female touch. I love this short work and have listened to it several times.

Words fall short

I was visited by my fiancée after she passed away in a car accident in April of 2013; she gave me a hug one morning and said she missed me several months after the accident. I remember it well. This book appears true to me, from what I have experienced, and I try to exercise strong discernment with these topics.

Beautiful depiction of heaven. I can only imagine that my imagination cant do heaven justice, but this gets close.

This classic reading on Heaven and what it is like is inspiringly and delightfully recorded for anyone to enjoy. The original source book, Intra Muros: My Dream of Heaven, authenticates the integrity or Rebecca Springer's character, her Christian life and it's Biblical authenticity.I fully recommend the book and the recording of it.It is a great comfort and encouragement.

Of all the books written with views of the heavenly life, this one stands above them. Miss Rebecca has blessed so many lives where there has been loss and suffering in earth trials. If you have not read this please do so. It is special for the exposure to the life that all born again Christians long and wait for written in the quaint Victorian era language. May the Lord bless you as you read this blessed book from long ago.

Beautiful Story for Christians Who Are Grieving

This book is a treasure for anyone who is grieving. If you are a fan of Jane Austen or period books/films in general, you will love this book. Although this is an account of a near death experience, the beautiful way it is written was medicine for my grief after my beautiful Mother passes away suddenly. This is not the Bible, nor should it be taken as any sort of Holy Spirit inspired gospel/story. It is a story of one woman's experience whether real or imagined and should be read as such. It is among my all time favorite reads.
