Publisher's summary

Harriet Ann Jacob's autobiography documents her life as a slave and how she attained freedom for herself and her children. Harrowing in its descriptions of sexual abuse, Jacob's slave narrative is notable for the appeal it made to abolitionist women to open their eyes to the realities of slavery. Deemed too shocking for reading audiences at the time, the book was shelved before it was published in 1861 near the start of the Civil War.

Great book

This book was a great depiction of slavery, through the eyes of a woman who experienced it. It was informative and held my attention until the end. I also learned things I wasn’t aware of, I thought once you made it to the north, you were free, boy was I wrong. I also knew w/o the kindness of some white people slavery would have never ended. It’s amazing to read about how some understood, that slavery was and abomination and helped black folks, while also reading about the cruelty’s of other white folks disgusted me. It was a great read(or listen lol). This shld be a book, that is required reading for high school and college age kids, to inform them of the truths of this misguided country..

Pain and love

I grew up knowing about slavery and the horror of it. But when you read a book told by a person who is living though it, it takes the horror on a much deeper level. It hurts your soul and you wonder how can this cruelty can be in so many people. How can anyone have the audacity and the Heartlessness to feel entitled to have a slave that you regard as not a human being. Linda tells the story of her life with so much passion and Strength. It’s a book about Endurance and survival. Beautiful written and narrated. It will stay with me, and help make me a better person. Wonderful book that must be read.

With so much to add about the systems put in place to hlod people back. This book is a eye opener to someone keeping the mind to go forward in the Spirit of freedom.

Heart breaking yet happy ending

I’m glad Linda became free. She should’ve never been enslaved. Fuck the oppressive system that still exists

Well done

I loved this story. The reader had a voice that expressive when needed, as well as emotional. I could feel the words of her story and journal. At times i could even imagine places and situations she described. I’ve always enjoyed reading. One day would like to narrate myself. This is a must read sacrifice, heart break, mustard seed faith and unconditional love from people you would last expect!

Affliction

It was hard to believe this was a true story because I have never heard of slave stories that discussed any type of freedom they had with their owners ( lack a better coloful word)& for them to have any currency for their owners to borrow or steal. The person who told the story used such updated terms til I thought the time was during the Jim Crow Era verses slavery Era. It took me months to get through the story due to loosing interest in the voice of the story teller& the long descriptive stories of ever character that she knew or met. I didn't know that it was a true story until the last couple of chapters and maybe not then however, it was interesting & unfortunate life for so many and always a story where some so called Christian Anglo-Saxon saved them but I guess it's some truth to that because some of my ancestors had to be freed in order for me & mine to exist.

Captivating

Truly heartbreaking to hear the horrors that African Americans suffered in those days. The resilience of Linda is beyond comprehension.
