Publisher's summary

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts by Gabor Maté, read by Daniel Maté.

To heal addiction, you have to go back to the start...

Dr Gabor Maté is one of the world's most revered thinkers on the psychology of addiction. His radical findings - based on decades of work with patients challenged by catastrophic drug addiction and mental illness - are reframing how we view all human development.
In this award-winning modern classic, Gabor Maté takes a holistic and compassionate approach to addiction, whether to alcohol, drugs, sex, money or anything self-destructive. He presents it not as a discrete phenomenon confined to a weak-willed few, but as a continuum that runs through (and even underpins) our society; not as a medical 'condition', but rather the result of a complex interplay of personal history, emotional development and brain chemistry.

Distilling cutting-edge research from around the world, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts avoids glib self-help remedies, instead promoting self-understanding as the first key to healing and wellness. Blending personal stories and science with positive solutions, and written in spellbinding prose, it is a must-read that will change how you see yourself, others and the world.

10th anniversary edition, updated with new chapter on the Opiod crisis

Insightful: Inspires Empathy

Dr Maté manages to intersect the physical aspect with the psychological (when it comes to addict). You will start to feel empathy for those who struggle with addiction and maybe, start to understand yourself a little better.

Life changing

This book has finally made me understand why I behave the way I do. It is with a great sense of relief that I can now stop beating myself up, loathing my weaknesses and instead show kindness and compassion towards myself. My gratitude to Dr Maté is immense and I don’t say this lightly, for his book has changed my future. Thank you Sir.

I value his insightfulness/knowledge

Yes. Amazing and insightful. One would hope many working in the area of addictions and mental well-being read this book and/or any of his books. This includes those looking for their own understanding in trauma/addictions. Valued resource

Brilliant book

I find it a brilliant book. It goes beyond the addictions per se and it takes us to the understanding of what is behind them. And let’s get real: we all have ours. And most often we don’t want to call them addictions because we can’t stand the fact that ‘we have an challenge’ to overcome!
I love how Dr. Gabor Mate explains everything and takes us with him through his own journey!
I absolutely loved the book!

A great introduction to psychological trauma and addiction for medics and health workers

This book is a must read for all who seek to widen their perspective on the neurological and environmental causes of addiction beyond "choices" or free will.

Must read for therapists, body-workers, health workers, caretakers, and social workers.

Informative and highly valuable

The tone and pace of the delivery was perfect. I have shared widely, as I find this subject and Dr Maté's findings to have given me massive insights into my work, my parenting and the psyche of society. The puritanical approach to addicts by governments indicates a gross abdication of responsibility.

An eye opening book

The book with all the car studies and stories help us understand the deeper reasons why addiction happens and how a drug addict and one addicted to buying music /books are the same. The fact that addiction is a coping mechanism for some form of trauma or negative self-image, is made so much clearer by the work of Dr. Mate.

Thanks for being so vulnerable with your own story as well Dr. Mate.
