Publisher's Summary
A secluded mountain lodge. The perfect getaway. So remote no one will ever find you.
The promise of a luxury vacation at a secluded wilderness spa has brought together eight lucky guests. But nothing is what they were led to believe. As a fierce storm barrels down and all contact with the outside is cut off, the guests fear that it’s not a getaway. It’s a trap.
Each one has a secret. Each one has something to hide. And now, as darkness closes in, they all have something to fear - including one another.
Alerted to the vanished party of strangers, homicide cop Mason Deniaud and search and rescue expert Callie Sutton must brave the brutal elements of the mountains to find them. But even Mason and Callie have no idea how precious time is. Because the clock is ticking, and one by one, the guests of Forest Shadow Lodge are being hunted. For them, surviving becomes part of a diabolical game.

Terrible Narration!
The story was ok but the narrator pronounced the words AGAIN and BEEN so strangely and it seemed like those two words were used in every other sentence that it made me return the book. I can not bring my self to listen to anything further from this narrator without wanting to tear my ears off.

Agatha Christie revamped...
Although I was kept entertained and enjoyed this book I also found it not believable right from the beginning. A group of professionals are invited out to a spa/lodge that is yet to open. It’s in the middle of nowhere, forest land surrounding, in/out by plane. They are not given a location and there is no cell phone reception. And they’re supposed to be there for 10 days. These are business owners and a doctor with a popular practice. Yes they are getting this for free with the possibility of a contract for the goods or services they provide , no one has met or actually spoken with the owner of the lodge. All communication has been handled by email. One of the women is leaving a young daughter at home. Really? And no way to contact her. I don’t know about anybody else but I would be taking a pass. Anyway, the killer in this book has taken lessons from the Agatha Christie novel, And Then There Were None. That book is referred to many times in this book. The participants all carry a horrible secret. What they don’t know in the beginning is that each of their secrets are connected to a tragedy that happened 14 years ago. The secondary search and rescue story that alternates with the lodger’s story is more believable. Susan Hanfield does an excellent job narrating. Recommended light listening however I do enjoy this author’s Angie Pallorino books much more. If you found this review helpful please indicate so. Thank You.

14+ Hours of Pure Enjoyment!!
In the Dark is a really good novel. I just happened to be looking for my next read and noticed Loreth Anne White’s new release. She’s an author I generally enjoy so I bought it right away. I think finding this book on a whim made it better. The plot has some unique elements that made me want to listen all day and night. It has twists & turns, some gory scenes, and most importantly a lot of mystery trying to figure out the identity of the killer. The story may not be completely plausible, but this is a work of fiction after all, and I was hooked from the get go! However, if you’ve been looking forward to this novel for the last several months then you might be less forgiving for this shortcoming. In addition, I personally found the narration is better by adjusting the audio speed to 1.25. Susan Hanfield’s does an outstanding job narrating. I would love to read another book featuring Mason and Callie!! Fingers crossed. Also, If you have kindle unlimited you can get the audiobook for $1.99 which makes the story even better!

Alert for narrator
Ok....just started this book and so far so good.....except for the narrator. Just want to alert people, like me, who get irritated with certain pronunciations of certain words.....For example: the word "been" pronounced as "bean", or "again" pronounced as "ah-gain" or "against" as "ah-gainst". This is petty...and perhaps up in the British Columbia area where this book takes place this is how these words are pronounced....but to this Oklahoma girl it's like nails scraping against the chalk board to me for 14 plus hours of this book. Just saying....totally personal reflection. However, the story seems good so I am going to continue and hope I can set aside my judgement of the narrator and just listen to the story. I always love LA White's books. ....ok.....I'm back....and have finished the book. As always, LA White did not disappoint. This was a good mystery/thriller....and absent the romance theme that is usually intertwined in her stories....though I'll let the other readers decide on that so I don't spoil anything. It has twists and turns and surprises.

Needed a better editor and a different narrator
Why it needed a better editor: This story was much too drawn out at the end. It went on and on and on. Some things were just too difficult to believe, like a pilot who doesn't bother to make sure the radio is working before taking off. There were also some obvious mistakes. For example, two different characters get the title of the Agatha Christie novel that the murderer uses for inspiration wrong. (It's Ten Little Indians not Ten Little Soldiers.) Why it needed a different narrator: As others have noted, this narrator has pronounced words with an obvious affect. It first became distracting and eventually it became annoying, The worst examples were consistently pronouncing "been" like "bean" and "again" like "agayn". It was also difficult to tell which character was speaking at times and her tone of voice sounded too dramatic in places. .

Decent Story, annoying narration
I listen to hundreds of audiobooks a year, and I have yet to leave a negative review. However, this narrator has left me wanting to stop listening after 4 hours. As an example, her pronunciation of “again” (a-geen) and “been” (“bean”) sounds so contrived and annoying.

Not as good as she usually is
I’ve been looking forward to this release for months!!! Maybe I had too high of hopes since this fell far short of my expectations. In The Dark starts off excellent! Great cast of characters, some likable others not so much. As the plot is revealed I was able to figure out how it was going to progress. Knowing the author I was waiting for the twist, the big moment all her other books have. I waited and waited but the story continued to drag on. Obviously nothing surprising happened. Also the way the narrator says “again” was like nails on a chalkboard to me. It seemed like it was said 8 million times.

Major book hangover material! And I'm okay with i
The book? Absolutely the most fantastic read I have had in years, and I have read some pretty great books, most of which include other Loreth Anne White works. The Audible? Holy. Effing. Cow!!!!!! Susan Hanfield is newer to me as a narrator, and you bet I will be looking for more. I cannot get over what wonderful characters and tales that White writes. Nature scenes are intense. Character reactions are visceral. As a reader, you are right there with the characters and everything else falls away.
