Publisher's summary

She pretends to be a Yankee officer's widow in order to survive. But what will she do when he returns home to a wife he didn't marry?

Her heart sought shelter. Her soul found home.

Ella Whitaker rescues a newborn from the dying arms of a woman of ill repute and at long last she has someone to love. In need of a wet nurse, she arrives at Belmont Plantation just as Federal soldiers demand to speak to the owner. Thinking quickly, Ella masquerades as a Yankee officer's widow in order to have a roof over her head and a home for the child. Now she must work even harder to hide her Scottish immigrant roots and pretend to be a refined Southern lady or risk losing her new son.

Major Westley Remington has dedicated his life to serving his country. The Civil War has divided his family, torn his thoughts of glory, and left him with a wound that may never heal. Westley returns home on medical furlough to settle his father's estate at Belmont Plantation, only to find his home is being run by a fiery and independent woman - one many believe to be his wife. Now he is faced with a conflict he's never been trained to fight, and one she has yet to conquer.

Great Historical Fiction post Civil War

Well worth listening to. Good story line - well developed. Lots of action. I liked how historical details were woven into the fictional story. Plus how Godly principals were simply incorporated.

Amazing

I try to find Christ based ebooks but they are hard to find ones that speak to your spirit. If everyone could learn what God teaches us about his love as it shows Jesus teaching to this women there would be less shattered lives. Although the story is fictional the message was true. Thank you for writing this book. May God bless all that you do for him and your writing for him in Jesus name. Amen

Exceptional Narration!!

This was my first book of Miss McGee's. I am originally from Louisiana and visited Mississippi regularly including some of the historical plantations. I've always been intrigued with the civil war era and felt like this book exceeded my expectations. It kept me engaged through out the entire work not just the audio but the written. Great job on this story. I really felt like I was going back in time and could really visualize everything. I have to say that this had exceptional narration! I'm hearing impaired and audiobooks can be challenging because phonetics often blur and I'm not able to catch what was being said and unfortunately I lose bits and pieces of the story and in some cases just have to put it down. Not the case with this narrator! Never have I ever had a narrator that was so easy to understand and also able to use such different dialects to differentiate the characters. It was so much so that I really had to think if I was listening to someone else speaking. She was phenomenal! not only will I read more of Ms.McGee's novels but will most certainly listen to those narrated by Ms. Austin.

Good, not great

I enjoyed the story. It kept me engaged and definitely had amusing moments, but wasn't the most exciting I've ever read. The message in the story was good. A clean Christian historical romance. I wasn't very fond of the narrator however. She was good with the accents, but her cadence was odd, almost robotic, when characters were speaking, especially the male characters. I will likely try to avoid books narrated by her in the future.
