In the future, mankind has learned to manipulate their DNA, harnessing only the good genes, like intelligence, strength, and height. They called this prime DNA and humans rushed to get these new pDNA injections, which gave them superhuman-like qualities. Centuries later, however, their DNA became so engineered that humans rarely lived past the age of 30, thanks to a new deadly disease called the Kiss. The only cure is to receive an injection of oDNA, DNA from an Original human that hasn't been genetically altered. Problem is there aren't many Originals left.

Narration ruined it for me
The actual story was very well written, but the narrator has a very awkward way of pronouncing every single syllable in a word that took me away from the story and had me focusing on why she sounded so stilted and robotic.
I see it's a different narrator for this one, not the narrator who read the first book. The first book was very enjoyable to listen to. This one was tough to get into though.
Instead of her words flowing at a steady pace, her choppy reading made each word stand out and caused the dialogue to sound stiff and unreal instead of the conversational way most people actually speak.
Overall though, the book is still a great read, great plot, and good characters. But, I believe I will use my Kindle Unlimited subscription to borrow the third book in the series that is now available, and read it on my own instead of waiting for the audio book to be released.

The book is good but it is hard to listen to. Book 1 had a wonderful narrator but I don’t know if I’ll be able to finish book 2 or listen to book 3 because of how unnatural and awkward the new narrator sounds.

Great Book!
So far I've found this trilogy to be a well crafted intriguing read. The only reason I did not give this 5 stars was because the narrator pronounces a female characters name as (Gay-bri-el). I believe the author was using the name pronunciation (Ga-bri-el). I have no proof without a physical copy of the book, but it was annoying to hear a male name for a female character. (This society has straight forward gender norms as far as I can tell, so the character names have traditional male or female connotations)

Awkward narration
I'm really frustrated that I spent $8 on this awkward, robotic. and lackluster audiobook. The narrator's speaking cadence is so choppy and tone deaf, almost Shatner-like. For instance: "I looked at the VIEWING panel and saw MEYER. He was WEARING a striped shirt, and pants. 'WHERE IS, my guard?' I askedlookingdownthehall."

Great story
Really like this series but the narrator is a bit frustrating. At first I thought the near-automaton, staccato voice was intentional. Like a vocal example of just how robotically she had been raised. But I’m at the end of the second of the trilogy and it’s just annoying now. It reminds me of an AI movie voice where every single word must be pronounced perfectly. AGGGHHH!

3.25 undazzled stars ★★★✬✩
This book is for you if… you've enjoyed the prequel and would like to continue Avalyn's story. Or maybe you're just here for Meyer, I certainly couldn't blame you.
⤐ Overall.
This was by all accounts an unremarkable story. I'm truly sorry to say this but I even procrastinated writing this review because I have no clue what to say.
We know most of the characters. At least I think so because I've been listening to the audiobooks back to back over the last weeks and I can't even separate most of the plot anymore, lol. We know most of the characters but are introduced to a few new ones and the arch of suspense goes along the same lines as the previous one. It's not that the plot is similar it's just that I'm similarly clueless as to what to say about this than with the prequel
World(-building). Because we leave the safe surroundings of Elore in this instalment, we finally realise how twisted the reality inside it is. Different forms of settlement, as well as new tech, are introduced.
⤐ What’s happening.
‘So how is it that a girl who wanted to remain in the shadows somehow keeps thrusting herself into the light?’
That's what's keeping Avalyn busy while she's jumping from one challenge to the next, hunted by Direction and questioning Affinity's motives.

The Grass Isn't Always Greener on the Other Side
This was a great continuation! After Avlyn escapes Elore, she finds out that the Outerbounds isn’t what she was hoping for and everyone wants to control her and her power, yet again. New Philadelphia is full of nature and color, but it’s not a place to feel safe in. She doesn’t know who to trust except for her brother and friends which leads to more complications and revelations. Avlyn and her group are very realistic teenagers always going through brave, scared, and stressed phases, but she makes plenty of aggravating decisions along the way. We learn more about Avlyn and Ben’s abilities in this sequel and the action isn’t as frequent. The love triangle between Avlyn, Aaron, and Meyer is progressing and feels mostly natural within the story. I can’t wait to see more of this technological world and how her story ends!
Brittany did a great job with this narration! I was honestly surprised that the narrator was changed between the first and second book, but the voices were similar. I liked that she was able to put emotions where they were needed, but could also portray the emotionless world as well with her performance.

Brilliant second installment
Really enjoyed this book. A great second installments. Lots of action and keeping you on the edge of your seat.
Averlyn doesn't know who she can trust but she knows that she trusts Myer. When he suggests going to his mother's hidden home, Averlyn knows she will as she is having feelings for Myer.
I liked the narrator and she sounded very similar to the first narrator in Configured. Very good a doing different voices for men and women (which is normally one of my bugbears) however there was a few bits that sounded a bit monotone. Not sure if that was on purpose because it's set in a world where feelings have been suppressed if it was then I totally understand. I'm looking forward to the third book and not sure if it's out yet but would love a copy when it's released. We'll done Jenetta Penner. It's a fab story. I received a free copy of this book for an honest review and the review is all my own opinions. It really is a great book.

Fully immersed
A thrill from start to finish, once again Penner managed to surprise me with the events of this book - I definitely didn't see everything coming! The world gets richer, the characters more polarising and I became more and more invested. Although I didn't enjoy this narrator as much as the narrator for the first book, I eagerly await the conclusion to the series.

Narrator ruins the experience
For a book entitled “immersed”, I would like to be immersed by the experience. Instead it took me four times longer to finish this audiobook than any other due to the narrator. Instead of just reading, she read every single syllable. This. Is. An. Example. Of. How. She. Reads. The. Book. And. It. Is. Very. Distracting.
I am enjoying the story so this is very disappointing.
