The Islamic State, known as ISIS, exploded into the public eye in 2014 with startling speed and shocking brutality. It has captured the imagination of the global jihadist movement, attracting recruits in unprecedented numbers and wreaking bloody destruction with a sadistic glee that has alienated even the hardcore terrorists of its parent organization, al Qaeda.
Jessica Stern and J.M. Berger, two of America’s leading experts on terrorism, dissect the new model for violent extremism that ISIS has leveraged into an empire of death in Iraq and Syria, and an international network that is rapidly expanding in the Middle East, North Africa and around the world.
ISIS: The State of Terror traces the ideological innovations that the group deploys to recruit unprecedented numbers of Westerners, the composition of its infamous snuff videos, and the technological tools it exploits on social media to broadcast its atrocities, and its recruiting pitch to the world, including its success at attracting thousands of Western adherents. The authors examine ISIS’s predatory abuse of women and children and its use of horror to manipulate world leaders and its own adherents as it builds its twisted society. The authors offer a much-needed perspective on how world leaders should prioritize and respond to ISIS’s deliberate and insidious provocations.

What did you like best about ISIS: The State of Terror? What did you like least?
The confirmation of what we've heard reported to us about the who, what, when, where, how about ISIS. It seemed to get lost the fact that these cowards always want to use armed force on unarmed people and call that terror. It's not terror, it's cowardace at it's best.Would you recommend ISIS: The State of Terror to your friends? Why or why not?
I don't know, there wasn't anything earth shattering in the book that most people don't know already if you pay attention to the news.Did Ray Porter do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Kinda,Did ISIS: The State of Terror inspire you to do anything?
Inspire me to do anything? I'm already a Gulf War Vet, and I long before this book came out had to resist the urge to re-enlist to go fight these crazy people some more.Any additional comments?
I wish the people that wrote this book, the news media, and all these scholar's would adjust their stance just alittle bit and let's work on turning the tables on all these crazy Islam people by reporting the fact's. When we capture one of their cowards, we feed them, cloth them, let them follow their religion, etc. God forbid if we make them wear funny clothes, or take funny pictures of them or don't let them get enough sleep or pray to mecca on time. However when they capture one of our soldiers/citizens they rape them, torture them and yes wait for it BEHEAD them.We need to do better in the media about this crazy difference. Our supposedly scholars need to get a grip and correctly identify this and address it instead of giving in to them. This non-sense of "wack-a-mole" and "splintering from over whelming force" bull.
We need to hunt these coward killer's down and address them. We need to make all Islam people accountable! Period. You don't hear of any other religion beheading "non-believers" at all. And this crap about the "Crusades" ya right do your homework who were the Christian's fighting and why?? Yep you guessed it radical Islam......
ISIS = COWARDS!

Those who want to vastly improve their understanding of Daesh (ISIS) - Read this book.
This was a great read. The authors took a complex topic and attempted to simplify the information in such a way that the layman might understand. In terms of simplification and establishing an effective breakdown of the information, I believe the authors have succeeded. In terms of making the information accessible to the layman, I feel the beginner would benefit from the information contained within this book, though a more knowledgeable reader will glean immense detail. The nuances expressed in the text pertaining to the differences between al Qaeda in Iraq and Daesh, are intricate and critical to the overall understanding.
The authors also wrap up the text with a phenomenal breakdown of terrorism, salafi practices of Islam, as well as definitions and practices of Jihad in its myriad forms.

ISIS: The State of Terror, describes what really is a culminating piece of what was inevitably going to happen based on Islamic History and Belief followed by Al-Qaeda and then the US entry and exit from Iraq.
Mr. Drogin presents a non-partisan review of the US involvement in Iraq and again, inevitably (albeit barely skimming the "Curveball" reason for our entry), what was going to occur after we left prematurely. He also gives an excellent brief account of Islamic History, specifically focusing on the divisions and subsequent fight for legitimacy and reign between the two major sects of Islam.
This work is obviously important based solely off the paucity of information we have about ISIS. There have been a few other works, and there will definitely be more, but the timing of this one is inimitable (i.e., right as we're making plans to counter the mislabeled "JV team").
Hope the current administration is reading this

Any additional comments?
A very good primer on ISIS and the world of Islamic terrorism. It's timely, being the first book on the subject at Audible. Perhaps it lacked a little depth. I would have preferred to hear more about Western efforts to upturn ISIS and counter its magnetic attraction. How does the US undermine ISIS in the psychological battlefield? That's the question I thought went unanswered, at least in detail. Overall, though, very good. I learned quite a few things.Good information well organized...
