Publisher's Summary

From the charming and wickedly funny cocreator and star of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, a collection of hilarious personal essays, poems, and even amusement park maps on the subjects of insecurity, fame, anxiety, and much more.

Rachel Bloom has felt abnormal and out of place her whole life. In this exploration of what she thinks makes her "different" she's come to realize that a lot of people also feel this way; even people who she otherwise thought were "normal".

In a collection of laugh-out-loud funny essays, all told in the unique voice (sometimes singing voice) that made her a star; Rachel writes about everything from her love of Disney, OCD and depression, weirdness, and Spanx to the story of how she didn't poop in the toilet until she was four years old; Rachel's pieces are hilarious, smart, and infinitely relatable (except for the pooping thing).

Four hours of my life I'll never get back

Unless you want to listen to an egocentric twit talk about herself for four hours, don't bother. I seriously don't know who told Rachel Bloom to write an autobiography, but they really need to reconsider their life path. It started out OK, but then the whole "poor me" and the "horrible bullying" was absolutely ridiculous. She really does completely discount those who have ACTUALLY BEEN BULLIED and really EXPERIENCE SEXUAL HARRASSMENT. Her lame disclaimers of "I know it's not as bad as some people's trauma, but..." is trite and condescending. The only piece of this entire book that was actually funny was her performance of her life as a Greek tragedy. It was hysterical... how awful the performance was. Please Rachel Bloom, DO NOT WRITE ANOTHER BOOK! No one wants to hear the story of a nerdy, only child, "Jewish princess" (she calls herself that) who wore diapers until she was five.

Not worth using a "credit"

Let me start off by saying that I adore CEG-- have watched the series several times-- but there was something that I just couldn't connect with in this book. It's not that it was *bad*, but it wasn't *good*. I didn't laugh. I had been so excited to get it, and then....... meh.

To be fair, I didn't listen past the first hour (that's about 20% of the book), but I didn't want to. Then, when I got back into my car on three different occasions, I chose a different book each time. That tells me that I probably would never finish it, and I should just go ahead and exchange it.

For a funnier experience with a similar vibe, try Jenny Lawson's Furiously Happy or Let's Pretend This Never Happened.

Eh

Love Rachel Bloom/ Crazy Ex but this was not her finest work. Parts were interesting but overall it came off a little bizarre and scattered. The tone of her delivery sounded a bit like a middle school kid.

MUST listen!

Such a great listen!! Rachel Bloom is such a talent. As a huge fan of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, I had to preorder this book. And it did not disappoint. I listened in one day! Unlike some memoirs from actor, where I’m so confused how they could be so bad when acting is literally their job, Rachel does a refreshingly amazing job. No doubt because of her background in theatre. The book is amazing, and hilarious while still thought provoking all on its own. But it’s Rachel’s narration that makes it next level for me. I hope she writes more, because I will literally read (and listen to ) anything she does.

I fucking love Rachel bloom!

Rachel is talented, honest, funny, vulnerable, thought provoking and generally just an all-around amazing person! I love Crazy Ex-Girlfriend! I love her early YouTube videos. I am so impressed and thoroughly loved hearing more about her early life and mental health struggles. My adult children and I have watched all of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and shared Rebecca Bunch’s journey. We all struggle with mental health and self-worth and as Rachel says, “It’s nice to know you are not alone.” Incidentally, I listen to quite a few audiobooks and enjoyed many of them but this is the first one I’ve actually taken the time to write a review about.

Spoiler:
Rachel: I am very sorry to hear about your writing partner Adams’s death from COVID-19. I can only imagine what a blow that was. I got very weepy when I listened to that part of the book.

Congratulations on the birth of your daughter! Kids can definitely be a struggle but they are definitely a delight like no other.

Excellent

I *love* Rachel Bloom and this book was everything I wanted it to be when I heard she was writing a book. She’s an excellent writer and an excellent reader / performer. The main story is very well written and funny but there’s lots of subtle humor sprinkled through out while still making you feel. I absolutely loved it and would recommend. Great book.
