Now with a new preface

A moving, hopeful, and refreshingly candid memoir by the husband of former Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg about growing up gay in his small Midwestern town, his relationship with Pete, and his hope for America's future.

Throughout the past year, teacher Chasten Glezman Buttigieg has emerged on the national stage, having left his classroom in South Bend, Indiana, to travel cross-country in support of his husband, former mayor Pete Buttigieg, and Pete's groundbreaking presidential campaign. Through Chasten's joyful, witty social media posts, the public gained a behind-the-scenes look at his life with Pete on the trail - moments that might have ranged from the mundane to the surprising but that were always heartfelt.

Chasten has overcome a multitude of obstacles to get here. In this moving, uplifting memoir, he recounts his journey to finding acceptance as a gay man. He recalls his upbringing in rural Michigan, where he knew he was different, where indeed he felt different from his father and brothers. He recounts his coming out and how he's healed from revealing his secret to his family, friends, community, and the world. And he tells the story of meeting his boyfriend, whom he would marry and who would eventually become a major Democratic leader.

With unflinching honesty, unflappable courage, and great warmth, Chasten Buttigieg relays his experience of growing up in America and embracing his true self, while inspiring others to do the same.

A common yet inspiring and hopeful story

Chasten's story before meeting Pete is common among LGBT folks living in red pockets in America, no matter how much folks from more liberal cities would like to believe. Because he speaks of his story so openly and authentically, both in this book and on the numerous campaign events and interviews he's given, it's inspiring to folks still living it. He's frank about his experiences, both the good and the bad (I wanted to list down examples but I don't want to give too much away.

His voice is so much his own, and his background in theater gave him the skill to narrate his story in the way he intended (that is, conversational and authentic) and to act out the voices of people around him (his impression of Pete is both accurate and hilarious). And overall, this book made me laugh, cry, want to hunt down some of his exes, and feel hopeful.

Loved it!

What a touching insight to Chasten and Pete's lives and their historic run for the Democratic Nominee for President. I'm sure we haven't seen the last of either of them.

Spectacular audiobook. After months of hearing Pete talk about how marvelous his husband is, Chasten really delivered.

An All-American Boy Story

Authentic. Relatable. Funny. Kind. American. Chasten Buttigieg is his own man, and this is the story of how he both created and discovered himself.

Encouraging

Chasten references how it can be hard to be a gay man living in a place like Tulsa Oklahoma. As a gay man living and working in Tulsa Oklahoma I would have to say he is right. With that being said, it is encouraging to say that a Gay man named Pete (who btw is the same exact age as myself) ran for President of the United States. I loved getting to learn more about Chasten's life. And, I spit out my coffee in my truck when he held Obama's finger. LOL
