Story
How can a dead woman avenge herself on her killer 20 years after her murder? This is the puzzle facing Ben Devlin in his latest case. He is called to the scene of a murder - a man has been stabbed to death in his rented room, and when his identity is discovered, Devlin feels a ghost walk over his grave, as he knows the name Brooklyn Harris well. As a teenager, Harris beat his then-girlfriend Hannah Row to death, and then spent 12 years in prison for the murder.

Story
Detective Finnegan Beck is called to a crime scene - a remote house near the rural Irish town of Cross Beg - where a dog lies whimpering beside his beloved owner’s body. At first it looks like a burglary gone wrong. But Beck spots something his colleagues didn’t. The victim, Eddie Kavanagh, was wearing his smartest clothes. He’d brushed his hair. And, on closer inspection, a small velvet box containing an engagement ring is discovered in his pocket, along with a letter to a nameless woman, which seems to suggest she’s in danger.

Story
Northern Ireland, spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera, and a young woman’s suicide that may yet turn out to be murder: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things—and people—aren’t always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It’s no easy job—especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA but was last seen discussing business with someone from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force.

Story
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Publisher's summary
Lucy Black must protect the young and vulnerable... but can she protect herself?
Late December. A 16-year-old girl is found dead on a train line. Detective Sergeant Lucy Black is called to identify the body. The only clues to the dead teenager's last movements are stored in her mobile phone and on social media - and it soon becomes clear that her 'friends' weren't what they claimed to be.
Lucy is no stranger to death: she is still haunted by the memory of the child she failed to save, and the killer she failed to put behind bars. And with a new boss scrutinizing her every move, she is determined that - this time - she will leave no margin for error.
Hurt is a tense crime thriller about how, in the hands of a predator, trust can turn into terror.
Brian McGilloway was born in Derry, Northern Ireland, in 1974, and teaches English at St Columb's College, Derry. He lives near the Irish borderlands with his wife and their four children.

Story
One September morning, Doug accidentally runs right into another surfer on the beach. There are rules about these things. The other guy should call Doug a jerk, Doug should say, "my bad", and they should both paddle back out and move on. Problem is, the other surfer doesn't want to move on. He wants to fight. And for once in his life, Doug wants to fight back.

Story
It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

Great listen
I really enjoyed this mystery. Despite the delicate subject matter, the author didn't go to the gruesome places many mystery writers to which many mystery writers these days descend. The main character Lucy Black was realistically drawn, a strong and interesting heroine. The principal storyline was well done. Nothing too earth shattering or twisty but there was enough suspense and interest in Lucy's methodical unraveling of what had happened to keep me hooked. Nice subplots as well. I liked entering a world (Northern Ireland) I don't know well. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes police centered mysteries set outside the US.

Another terrific McGilloway mystery!
My first Lucy Black book and I liked it very much. I like the characters and that the story centers on solving the crime rather than gratuitous gore. Starting another Lucy book tomorrow. Good use of credits.

My problem with this book
It’s not the narrator, who is fine though not my favorite. The basic story is okay, although I found the sentences structure too clipped and the characters shallow and not very interesting. I probably would have given it 3 stars except for one thing: the totally gratuitous burning to death of a dog who is trying, ‘whimpering’ to escape a burning house and is pushed back into the fire by the stream of water from the fire hoses. Totally. Gratuitous. Thanks, Mr. McGilloway, for giving me that image over and over in my mind. Totally. Gratuitous.
