Story
Warner spent his days like almost anyone else. He got up, went to work, answered phone calls in a call center, went home, spent time with his daughter, and went to sleep. Only to repeat the pattern over and over and over. Life was as mundane as anyone could ever fear it to be. Today was the day that all that would change. On this day, his daughter Maya would be nearly fatally injured, plunging Warner into a world of paranormal creatures, monsters, and magic he’d never known existed. The only consolation is that he discovers he’s not quite human, either.

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

REVIEW:
I have to say that I am still amazed that I am in love with a Zombie book. Okay I have one other series that is zombified that I love but it is TOTALLY different than the White Trash Zombie series. That being said I love the world that Ms. Rowland has created in this series. Zombies are not the crazy messed up ghouls that you think that the should be (well as long as they are not hunger then you have a mess on your hands and better run).
How a White Trash Zombie Got Her Groove Back was a good book, slow in a few parts and left me with a lot of “Well Craps” and “Now what are they going to do”. This was also a huge growing book for Angel. She really learns a lot about who she is and what she is capable of. But as a note to Ms. Rowland PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don’t let Angel go down that path (yes, you need to read to find out what I am talking about).
Ms. Rowland throw in a lot of twists and turns in this book that left me with a “Well Crap” I didn’t see that coming. While I was sad about a few events that happened in the beginning I believe now that they are for the best. Gaahhh, I can’t say much more that would be a bit of a possible spoiler. So, I will leave you with this if you are a White Trash Zombie fan, you will enjoy this newest book. If you are new to the series start with book 1 (it is a must).
I can’t wait to see what Ms. Rowland has in store for Angel and her Crew and The Tribe as a whole.
And once again Ms. McLemore does an amazing job narrating this book!!! Seriously I could not image Angel’s voice any other way except by Ms. McLemore!!!! Loved it!!!

Can I give it six stars?
This series is going strong and book number four does not disappoint. With each book, I kinda hold my breath, waiting for it to be bad and to be a let down, but "Groove Back" is awesome.
The story line is good; the complications, the twists, the who-done-it-ness, are all great. What's even better though, is the continued character development, that is the real genius of Rowland.
Angel is a flawed, reluctant hero, that makes me laugh with her and root for her. I love how she is growing and learning in her new life. I like her better maybe than any other character I've ever followed. I love the complexities of her relationships with her boss, her work peers, and her ex-boyfriend.
The ending of this one was the best ever. It was just really good.
If this is your introduction to this series, Rowland does a nice job of catching readers up, but she also gives away a lot, so you can't really go back and read them out of order because there are spoilers. This series really is read (listened-to) best in order.
People who are reading this series instead of listening to it are missing out on McLemore as the narrator. She really brings Angel's character alive, I mean, she is a real treasure, she takes this story from 5 star to a 6 star.

Another fun read!
I LOVE this series by Diana Rowland! It has a scrappy little heroine, and a wonderful ensemble cast. I wouldn't exactly call it a "horror" story, (even though there are tons of zombies). It is more of a mystery, with some humor, and some romance.

Not my favorite but still fun!
Listened for Fun (Audible)
Overall Rating: 3.75
Story Rating: 3.50
Character Rating: 4.00
Audio Rating: 4.00 (not part of the overall rating)
First Thought when Finished: How the White Trash Zombie Got Her Groove Back by Diana Rowland was not my favorite in the series but it was still full of fun, snark, action, and Angel Goodness!
Story Thoughts:First let me say this: The story did not suck. I have super high expectations cause Diana pretty much knocks it out of the park all the time. This time it just felt like I was waiting the whole book for something to happen and then felt more like it was a lead-in to the next book. Not that it is a bad thing but it just doesn't rank as my favorite in the series.
Character Thoughts: Same kick ass characters, Same kick ass time! In fact, there were a few characters that I started to like a bit more than I had previously. BIG plus resolution of that relationship I don't like. However, I think we are circling back but I hope I am wrong--they make better friends.
Audio Thoughts:
Narrated By Allison McLemore / Length: 14 hrs and 21 mins
Allison pretty much rocks every time! She is an excellent fit for this series and I wouldn't "read" it any other way :)
Final Thoughts: Angel has some big decisions in the future.

Not my favorite in the series but good
Any additional comments?
I liked this book but not nearly as much as I thought I would. I actually listened to about an hour and a half of this audiobook several months ago and found it just wasn't working for me so I decided to try it again later. I started over from the beginning this time and was able to make it through the book but still had some trouble with the first part of the book. The story did really pick up and by the end I was really enjoying myself but that beginning was rough for me.
I think that the beginning of the book had too big of a focus on Angel's internal dialogue. I love Angel but I have to tell you that she was starting to drive me crazy. Some of her actions seemed a bit childish to me and I kind of wanted the other characters to tell her to snap out of it. Once the action really got going I didn't have any of these issues so maybe the balance was just off at the beginning.
This book did have a lot of things going on and once the action got going it seemed to move pretty fast. There were a few revelations that I found completely surprising and look forward to seeing how they impact future installments. Angel proved that she can hold her own in a fight and is able to make really good decisions very quickly. The big twist was a pretty big surprise for me which was a definite plus.
Allison McLemore does such a wonderful job in narrating this series and this book was no exception. She is the voice of Angel to me. She is able to perform a large cast of characters quite well making it easy to follow along with conversations. She reads the story at a very nice pace making it very easy to listen for hours at a time.
I would recommend this series to others. This is the fourth book in a series that I think is best read in order. I thought that this was a good installment, not my favorite, but still good. I do consider 3 stars to be a good rating. I look forward to reading more of this series very soon.

Zombies in Manhattan
Would you try another book from Diana Rowland and/or Allison McLemore?
Yes. I love Rowland's stories and characters, and McLemore is a great narrator.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Angle is the best developed character. The others are just secondary to the plot. Which is a bit of a draw back.
Did Allison McLemore do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
McLemore's characters are distinctive and colorful in her narrations.
Did How the White Trash Zombie Got Her Groove Back inspire you to do anything?
The only inspired thought is to read the next book in this series.
Any additional comments?
Angle is developing into a more mature and educated person, I just wish she would stop cursing so much. This really become tedious.

This is becoming my new favorite series. Great plots and subplot and story arc. Fantastic characters. Very surprised to find myself identifying with a white trash zombie. Themes of friendship and ethics with a touch of snark to take the edge off. Nice!
