Publisher's Summary

Based on the highly acclaimed NPR podcast How I Built This with Guy Raz, this book offers priceless insights and inspiration from the world's top entrepreneurs on how to start, launch, and build a successful venture.

Great ideas often come from a simple spark: A soccer player on the New Zealand national team notices all the unused wool his country produces and figures out a way to turn them into shoes (Allbirds). A former Buddhist monk decides the very best way to spread his mindfulness teachings is by launching an app (Headspace). A sandwich cart vendor finds a way to reuse leftover pita bread and turns it into a multimillion-dollar business (Stacy’s Pita Chips).

Award-winning journalist and NPR host Guy Raz has interviewed more than 200 highly successful entrepreneurs to uncover amazing true stories like these. In How I Built This, he shares tips for every entrepreneur's journey: from the early days of formulating your idea, to raising money and recruiting employees, to fending off competitors, to finally paying yourself a real salary. This is a must-listen for anyone who has ever dreamed of starting their own business or wondered how trailblazing entrepreneurs made their own dreams a reality.

Great book for aspiring entrepreneurs

I loved every minute of this. I’ve heard some of these business’s stories before, but Guy Raz managed to uncover aspects that feel more real and put their founding into a much more relatable perspective. He seems to ask the right questions and really gain the trust of the founders he interviews. I’m left feeling like a really can start the business I want to start!

Inspiring and thoughtful

Like his podcast by the same name, but condensed and more thematic. Guy pulls out lessons and themes he’s learned from the founders he’s interviewed and peppers in how one life journey as well. Certainly one of my favorite books I’ve listened to.

Fascinating and informative read

As a regular “How I Built This” listener, I wondered whether this book would seem redundant. But while I’d already heard Guy’s podcast interviews with many of his subjects in the book, he manages to draw new insights and connections that are revelatory. His own experience, both personal and professional, along with his boundless curiosity and deep empathy, bring another invaluable dimension to what is one of the best primers for entrepreneurship I’ve ever read. Add to that his sense of humor and down-to-earth, accessible delivery, and you’ve got the ideal audio book.

Even though I'm a huge fan of HIBT & have listened to every episode of the podcast, when Guy asked us to buy his book i had to do it. i loved the heart & depth of his interviewing "style" and i loved the inspirational messages that he & the founders of the companies share . I look forward to his next endeavor & will be listening closely to every word. thanks Guy!! Sincerely, Liz Jardine

It’s like a companion for the podcast!

If you’ve listened to Guy Raz’ “How I Made This”, this book is like a companion edition to the podcast, distilling and elaborating on the lessons and advice that the startup founders he interviews learnt building their companies. And it’s read by Guy Raz himself! It doesn’t sound stilted and flat like most book reads do. Guy adds his own enthusiastic style from the podcast to reading this book and makes it an exceptional listen. If you haven’t listened to the podcast, go listen to it after reading this book. I love that unlike most stories that focus only on the successes , Guy walks you through the ups and downs and challenges that most startup founder s go through before the successful ones make their millions and billions. A lovely book that I’ll be referring to in the future.
