Publisher's Summary

As far as Peg Shaw is concerned, midlife and menopause have brought enough sweat and excitement to last a lifetime. Unfortunately, there are others who disagree. One night while stumbling back to bed from her nightly visit to the bathroom, Peg is stopped in her tracks by two women standing in her bedroom. As her husband sleeps soundly, Peg abruptly realizes that ghosts have come calling: one is her dead grandmother and the other is her spirit guide.

After her grandmother asks her to partner with other spirits to help law enforcement solve crimes, Peg reluctantly agrees to help bring justice to the deceased but persistent ghosts of a local couple. After Peg discovers that cold cases are much more difficult to eliminate than her hot flashes, she travels into unfamiliar territory where her inexperience with murder becomes no match for her determination to rid herself of her uninvited, heartbeat-less guests. After enlisting help from old friends and unexpected allies, Peg uncovers a dark secret at the heart of her sleepy township with the potential to bring more trouble than she bargained for.

In this paranormal adventure tale, a middle-aged woman in the throes of menopause is thrust into solving local crimes, with help from her new friends from Deadsville.

Hot Flashes

I thought this was a good cozy mystery/ghost/magical mystery book.I enjoyed most of it.I thought there was an excess of ghosts to keep track of.I also say magical because we all know that no police chief would open a cold case because a ghost said so.So,it was good. Brandolin Barrett was a fine narrator. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.'

Mature, but not senior;)

Not for someone with rigid spiritual beliefs. I found this to be an enjoyable mystery with a paranormal bent.
Peg Shaw is an empty-nester going through the fluctuations of menopause when she is suddenly visited by the ghost of her grandmother. Nana gives Peg a mission to help a murdered couple, but they’re not the only ghosts who turn up.
This is not a police procedural, so don’t expect the associated tight plotting. Ex: Officer Owen graduated with Peg’s older son in 1995, which is 24 years ago. Even if it was HS graduation, it would put them at 42 years old, +4 if college. He wouldn’t be the rookie on the force. Story copyright is 2018, so maybe 41? If you’re going to give a specific year, it helps to carry it through the story. Otherwise, just “8 years ago” works. I’m past menopause, so it’s not about being crotchety; rather, keeping the “little grey cells” sharp;)
I got some laughs from Peg’s crotchety-ness and mood swings from menopause, and trying to cope with an ever-expanding cast of spirits who involve themselves in the investigation. There are maybe double the spirit characters vs human.
Most enjoyable for someone who isn’t intimidated by life during and post menopause.
Barrett does a very decent job of narration. She has a very pleasant adult female voice that’s a great fit for this character, and she communicates a liveliness that engages the listener.
Happy to recommend. I did receive a promotional copy in exchange for an honest review.

I really did try to finish

I tried to edit my original review but doesn't seem I can? So just in case I am including what I wrote I am really trying to like this story. I like to buy the first in a coming series to 1) Help new authors and 2) to maybe get a great series to read. However, I cannot and do not like the female lead in this book. which in my opinion is sweet retribution on my part because she literally has not one thing nice to say to about almost everyone else in this book. From the Spirits to the living. Seriously, how many people can you call idiots, morons etc. Even her FATHER got her snide, rude thoughts (which evidently spirits can read BTW) I am debating whether or not to return it. The narrator was excellent though Update- Okay, I admit defeat. Being irritable due to menopause is one thing, being mean, nasty and just plain annoying is another. I couldn't take another page. I really hope Brandolin Barrett skips the rest of the series and reads for someone else

Entertaining!

I think this is a very entertaining story! I loved the way that the characters were very real with real reactions to situations. Not very often do I see a character that gets frustrated at things like a normal person would. It was refreshing.

Really Great Paranormal Cozy

I really enjoyed this listen! It was even better than I expected. I was fully hooked on this paranormal cozy from the start. It was relatively unique and a lot of fun. Peg is a little grumpy but very likeable as a character. I liked the author's style and writing.

The narrator's performance for this story was absolutely perfect. If had just the right amount of variation in tone to reflect the events of the story. She was clear and had great voice differentiation as well. Excellent performance!

Both the author and narrator are new to me, but I would gladly listen to other stories by them in the future.

Cute unique story of the afterlife

I enjoyed this light-hearted story of interacting with the departed. Enlisting crime-solving aide from spirits provided a unique solution. I also giggled at the departed learning how to be dead and them discovering new abilities. Not a heavy story at all. I'm looking forward to more from this author. Would have liked more "dealing with the change" anecdotes. The narrator was fabulous. Her tone was sarcastic in all the right places. Very pleasant listening. More tone changes for each character would be appreciated to catch onto who is talking. Overall a fun light story.

Hot Flashes/Cold Cases
The Peg Shaw Series, Book 1
By: Sue Hawley

This is a fun listen. It is a combination cozy mystery and paranormal fantasy with great humor. Peg is wanting a quiet life now that her kids are grown and gone from the home. She is going through the change, and things around her when spirits of people she knows as well as strangers show up and tell her she needs to solve a cold case. That's when the crazy ride begins. This is a great debut book, and I look forward to more books in this series.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed by Brandolin Barrett.

A spirited who done it.

This was a very easy book to listen to. The storyline flows well and the narration is very well done.
The premise of the tale is a refreshing change to the normal detective/ crime solving stories. The idea that people who have passed away help the heroine Peg solve the mystery is a very good twist.
I recommend listening to this book if you are a light mystery story fan.
I am looking forward to listening to more of Peg’s adventures.

Interesting and Entertaining

One thing that I really liked about this book was the unique concept. I dont' always like first-person narrations, but this book was an exception. Brandolin Barrett's performance was outstanding - she was able to bring Peg and the entire story to life.

Sue wrote an entertaining introduction book - well-built characters, perfectly-described setting and clever twists. I can honestly say that I am looking forward to more of this series. If you are looking for a dose of mystery with hints of fun here and there, I highly recommend this book.
