All Shane wanted was to get away from the wreckage of his career for a while. He picked New York City to provide him with a distraction from his early, unwanted retirement from the police force. New York City delivered, distracting him with three corpses and a miniature llama with a spitting problem and attitude.

If he wants to return to a normal life, he’ll have to face off against a sex trafficking ring targeting the woman of his dreams, ancient vampires, murderous criminals, his parents, and an FBI agent with a hidden agenda. Some days, it isn’t easy being an ex-cop.

I love how R.J. Blain mixes myth, lore, and a new take on the old creatures to create a funny, lighthearted, and magical ride for his listeners. The narrator did a fantastic job of creating the voices and personalities of the characters. Loved every minute of it!

Hilarious and Intriguing!

Very funny. I just loved it all. I don’t write very well but this review would like 15 word so hear they are.

Laughed so hard.

It’s hard to put my finger on why I liked this book. I think it’s the imagination, and the building and folklore of ‘Others’ (Non-humans; but really who doesn’t have a small bit of demon these days…) in the story. Also, it is quite funny throughout.

While it has all the usual vampires and werewolves, demons and the mafia — The book also has a fun array of other Characters and Beings and manages to keep them unique throughout the book.

There is some gore, but it’s cartoonish enough that it didn’t set off any, “well, that was disgusting. I think I won’t finish this“ feelings. A strange, but fun listen.

The narrator was amazing given how many different voices he needed throughout the book. The speech of some of the characters did have an odd cadence sometimes but overall -wow!
