In June 1944, the attention of the nation was riveted on the events unfolding in France. But in the Pacific, the Battle of Saipan was of extreme strategic importance. D-Day in the Pacific: The Battle of Saipan is a gripping account of one of the most dramatic engagements of World War II. The conquest of Saipan and the neighboring island of Tinian was a turning point in the war in the Pacific, making the American victory against Japan inevitable.

More than anything, however, Barnes' story is one of loss - of morale lost to alcoholism, teammates lost to friendly fire, missions aborted, and missions endlessly and futilely repeated. And yet against this dark background, Barnes graciously honors the quiet professionals whose service, overshadowed by the outsized story of Vietnam, nonetheless carried the day.

Story
Macau, New Orleans, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, and San Francisco. All of these metropolitan centers were once frontier cities, urban areas irrevocably shaped by cross-cultural borderland beginnings. Spanning a wide range of periods and locations, and including stories of 18th-century Detroit, 19th-century Seattle, and 20th-century Los Angeles, Frontier Cities recovers the history of these urban places and shows how, from the start, natives and newcomers alike shared streets, buildings, and interwoven lives.

Story
The stories of 15 combat veterans featured in this audiobook tell of the experiences of average Americans who fought US enemies on Pacific islands, in China, and in Burma during World War II. They relate much previously unavailable information about the military in which they served and the battles they fought. The possibility of death and permanent physical and mental injury was a common experience. This audiobook is a "must listen" for those who think they have learned all there is to know about World War II.

Story
The Special Activities Group (SAG) and its subordinate companies have received little attention from historians, despite being an elite combat unit and participating in highly classified and dangerous missions in Korea. Rarely receiving more attention than a footnote, their story usually begins and ends on the night of September 12, 1950, with an amphibious raid near Kunsan. Until their inactivation on March 31, 1951, SAG simply disappears from most Korean War histories.

Story
At the end of the nineteenth century, the United States emerged as an economic colossus in command of a new empire. Yet for the next 40 years the United States eschewed the kind of aggressive grand strategy that had marked other rising imperial powers in favor of a policy of moderation.
In Power and Restraint, Jeffrey W. Meiser explores why the United States - counter to widely accepted wisdom in international relations theory - chose the course it did.

This biography was originally published in 1983 and has not been updated. Any events after 1983 are not included. Best known for his role as Hawkeye Pierce on the award-winning TV series M*A*S*H, Alan Alda has made his way into Hollywood's spotlight while keeping remarkably free of its whirlwind parties and endless gossip. He remains a private man - an actor whose personal life and politics are far different from the character of the womanizing, side-cracking army doctor that brought him international fame.

America's strength has always been her people. Never has this strength been more evident than in time of war. From the Revolution on, the history of America at war has always been the history of ordinary men and women doing extraordinary things. But in the past, it has taken years, sometimes even decades, for those heroic men and women to be heard, for their individual stories to be told.

Going to your first yoga class might be a little weird, but what isn't weird the first time you try it? Your first day at a new job was little weird because it was new - you didn't know where things were, you didn't know peoples' names, and so on. There was a lot to remember and learn, but you survived; you got connected and got comfortable. Developing a yoga practice isn't really painful, although your poses and routines will be grueling at times.

In the summer of 1627, Barbary corsairs raided Iceland, killing dozens of people and abducting close to 400 to sell into slavery in Algiers. Among those taken was the Lutheran minister Reverend Olafur Egilsson. Reverend Olafur wrote The Travels to chronicle his experiences both as a captive and as a traveler across Europe (he journeyed alone from Algiers to Copenhagen in an attempt to raise funds to ransom the Icelandic captives who remained behind).

Publisher's Summary
Carl Lavin was a high school senior when Pearl Harbor was attacked. The Canton, Ohio, native enlisted when he turned 18, a decision that would take him with the US Army from training across the United States and Britain to combat with the 84th Infantry Division in the Battle of the Bulge.
Home Front to Battlefront is the tale of a foot soldier who finds himself thrust into a world where he and his unit grapple with the horrors of combat, the idiocies of bureaucracy, and the oddities of life back home - all in the same day. It is based on Carl's personal letters, his recollections, and those of the people he served beside, official military history, private papers, and more.
Home Front to Battlefront contributes the rich details of one soldier's experience to the broader literature on World War II. Lavin's adventures, in turn disarming and sobering, will appeal to general listeners, veterans, educators, and students of the war.
As a history, the audiobook offers insight into the wartime career of a Jewish Ohioan in the military, from enlistment to training through overseas deployment. As a biography, it reflects the emotions and the role of the individual in a total war effort that is all too often thought of as a machine war in which human soldiers were merely interchangeable cogs.
Published by Ohio University Press.
"If you like American history, or military history, or just a good narrative yarn, do check out "Home Front to Battlefront." - Bill Kristol, Weekly Standard
"Carl Lavin's combined letters and memoir are an invaluable contribution to the literature on the American G.I.'s experiences in World War II." - Peter S. Kindsvatter, author of American Soldiers: Ground Combat in the World Wars, Korea, and Vietnam

Thank you for the effort you put forth creating this book. It’s so important that we take time to collect and record the information from the past. This book is a very good read/listen and I will be passing it on to others. I am a very long time Stark County resident which made me feel that much more attached to the story.

Fantastic read
Any additional comments?
I thoroughly enjoyed Frank Lavin's account of his father's time in the Second World war. It is beautifully written and takes you into one person's on the ground experience of what it was like to go to war as a 19 year old.
