Resumen del Editor

The compelling WWII correspondence of Major Dick Winters, commander of the Band of Brothers.

Major Dick Winters of the 101st Airborne gained international acclaim when the tale of he and his men were depicted in the celebrated book and miniseries Band of Brothers. Hoisted as a modest hero who spurned adulation, Winters epitomized the notion of dignified leadership. His iconic World War II exploits have since been depicted in art and commemorated with monuments.

Beneath this marble image of a reserved officer is the story of a common Pennsylvanian tested by the daily trials and tribulations of military duty. His wartime correspondence with pen pal and naval reservist DeEtta Almon paints an endearing portrait of life on both the home front and battlefront - capturing the humor, horror, and humility that defined a generation. Interwoven with postwar reminiscences and rich historical context, Winters' letters offer compelling insights on the individual costs and motivations of World War II service members.

Not the Dick Winters we knew from HBO

I was caught off guard by the tone and tenor of the letters, then it struck me that the letters were a reflection of the times based on how my grandfather’s generation survived the times.

It is a good listen.

It is worthy of sharing with younger generations.

A Wonderful Tribute Tarnished by Mispronunciation.

One would think that an effort would have been made to correctly pronounce the names of locations that figure so prominently in the war time experiences of this amazing man. Alas, nearly every place name is butchered by the narrator, inducing a cringe each time. (Frankly, the narrator should be ashamed.) Nevertheless, the book is a wonderful tribute to Dick Winters, and a unique window into his war time experiences.

Nice listen

I enjoy anything I can read or listen to about the Major.
I’ve heard most of this before but it never gets old.
My only criticism is…if you are gonna be asked, or given the privilege to narrate a book about such an amazing man. Do your homework on how to pronounce the names of people and places important to the telling. The pronunciation was atrocious. This of us that read constantly about WWII are very familiar with the correct pronunciation of the names and places.
Sorry for the harsh criticism of that but it ruined the work put into the collection of writings and information in the book.

Great insight into Major Winters

This book offers great insight into Major Winters personality, mindset and attitude. After all, what could be more revealing than his own candid admissions and observations written to a dear and trusted friend during such tumultuous and uncertain times? And this book beautifully ties all of that together. It was a completely fascinating look into the inner workings of this great soldier.

Phenomenal

Major Winters has always been one of my hero’s. I volunteer and try to work with as many WWII veterans as possible to pick their brain and learn about their experiences during the war. Many share stories similar to what is discussed within this book, but the letter from Major Winters take the information to an entirely knee level of historical knowledge. You are able to see the growth of Major Winters not only as a soldier from training through retirement, but you also see the growth of being a leader. I highly recommend this book to any and all WWII buffs like myself. You will not be disappointed.
