Publisher's summary

The president is dead and the military divided, two powerful armies aligned to reignite a bloody civil war. Millions struggle and starve, waiting for the government to reform and initiate a recovery. Bishop and Terri have a simple plan - they want to retreat to an isolated strip of West Texas desert and prepare for the expansion of their family. It's not meant to be. The vacuum of leadership ignites an internal struggle that pulls the couple into the middle of a fast-paced, dangerous adventure as powerful, desperate men fight to control what's left of the United States. Book four of Joe Nobody's popular series, Holding Their Own, takes the listener on an adventure through a world trying to recover and rebuild after a complete collapse of society. The post-apocalyptic landscape is dangerous, unpredictable and often requires creative solutions just to survive. Join Bishop, Terri, and their friends as The Ascent begins.

One of the best surviving the collapse franchises.

What did you love best about Holding Their Own IV: The Ascent?

The unity of Bishop and Terri as they make the best of hard times in a country turned upside down. Bishop has strong beliefs about justice and is a character of high moral fiber.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Holding Their Own IV: The Ascent?

There isn't JUST one. Too many to choose from.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator sounds like he is reading Cinderella to five year old children. He robs the excitement and tension from this story. Bishop is an operator in a violent world, but this narrator has effectively removed all masculinity from the hero of this series.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book created sadness that it was over.

bullit-proof Bishop is at it again!

I enjoyed this next installment of the series. I appreciate how the author seems to lay out the complexities of our nation trying to recover from such a traumatic event in a very realistic manner. He also makes me think about urban survival as well as trying to stay away from heavily populated areas. The plot is well developed and I liked the cliff hanger end. They only negative is the recording itself. There tended to be lengthy gaps at the end of chapters as the book went on, so much so that several times I looked to see if the book was playing.

Transgender Narrator?

Would you listen to Holding Their Own IV: The Ascent again? Why?

I truly enjoy the storyline and I'm hooked on the series, but please, use same narrator as book 2, for Every book. Narrator of book 4 makes everyone sound like either a New York City resident (terrible accent imitation too) or a man wearing briefs that are 5 sizes to tight. I barely made it through book 4.

What did you like best about this story?

Bishop and Terri's plight to stay together and keep Terry safe no matter what.

Would you be willing to try another one of Brandon McKernan’s performances?

Not in this lifetime, NO WAY!!!!!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I enjoyed books 1-3 ( book 2 narrator was my favorite)

Love the story line hate the direction and performance!!!

The continuation of the story works well but unfortunately the direction just doesn't work very well. The accusation direction just doesn't make any sense what so ever.. Maybe it's the press poor performance by the narrator I don't know but he sounds like he's narrating a user manual for an un motorized lawn mower... Unfortunately you either listen to it or read it to follow the story all the way through. I've listens to the entire series a couple times and it does get better unfortunately or does start to drag on later books and some of the books are completely un believable but yet just believable enough to be plausible.

I should have read the reviews...

I read this entire series on Kindle a few years ago. I recently started buying and listening to them all on audiobook. The audio narrators for the previous books haven’t been perfect, but they’ve at least been able to pull you into the story and keep you wanting to know what happens next. The audio for this book however is unbearable. I stopped listening after the first chapter. He clearly didn’t read the previous books to understand character depth and development, and absolutely butchered this audio. His reading style is completely wrong for this genre of book. I think I’ll just reread this book on Kindle and hope the next book is narrated by someone else.

Getting better.

Joe Nobody continues to struggle with dialogue, but the story continues to improve. This is the best of the series so far.

Narration is supposed par

The narrators deliver was just awkward. Story is great though if you can get by the person reading it.
