In this, the first prose history in European civilization, Herodotus describes the growth of the Persian Empire with force, authority, and style. Perhaps most famously, the book tells the heroic tale of the Greeks' resistance to the vast invading force assembled by Xerxes, king of Persia. Here are not only the great battles - Marathon, Thermopylae, and Salamis - but also penetrating human insight and a powerful sense of epic destiny at work.

I loved the performance, which was passionate and lively. And the translation was a perfect blend of modern and archaic, are made it pretty authentic but easy to understand

A perfect mix!

We listen to many histories that often quote Herodotus without mentioning him. This book is so clearly read that it is a must listen for everyone who loves history and audible. Thank you so much. Dr. Ted Baehr

This has many entries and stories about historical figures for the author at the time of his writing, some time around the conclusion of the Peloponnesian War, with comments about what stories he believed or questioned. Some fable, some fact, and some information based on claimed first hand knowledge. If you are a history buff, you will like this.

Long, but interesting and complete.

Herodotus captured the spirit and history and David Timson brought him back to life!! He speaks each word as if he KNOWS that he knows more than the 'reader' and it's just perfect for how I envision Herodotus actually feeling as he wrote this over 2 millennia ago. The history came to life and became very personal stories of people as he could best determine.

David Timson is PERFECT!

This is an excellent story, obviously much of it is not fact but it gives an incredible perspective into how history in general should be regarded. Unrivaled peek into ancient life.

Excellent narration

The author did very well investing and getting most of the facts correct. However, a few things he didn't investigate, believing them to be correct.

Very well done!

Eloquent and flawless reading which made for a deeply felt and captivating performance of a very difficult material. The histories narrated are so detailed and express the writer’s unbiased approach to what happened.

Holland has provided a superb overview of Herodotus’, Histories, that is well footnoted, and includes a considerable bibliography. Not only useful for the scholar for recap, Holland is attractive to the general audience. The Audible performance by David Timson is essential for the Rawlinson translation. The Herodotus is modernized in the audible version in minor ways that I would submit the reader/listener will appreciate. Listening to Timson read the Rawlinson translation while reading added to the texture and consideration of Herodotus. It was essential, at least to a first reading. Holland’s treatment helped to refamiliarize factual, sequences, characters, relationships. Thankfully there is a well produced, good quality, well performed Audible for Herodotus for this translation. An ancient classic deserves nothing less.

Superb retelling of Herodotus
