Publisher's summary

Quinn

I'd say I'm down on my luck, but that's an understatement. I'm flat on my ass. Homeless, hungry, and in hiding with my little sister at the age of 21, I've never been so desperate. I've hit rock bottom when I get an offer I can't refuse. Sell my body to save my sister? There's nothing I won't do to keep her safe. I make the rules, and I'm not afraid to defend myself if this rich guy crosses the line. But once I see beneath his cold, calculating façade, the lines aren't so clear anymore.

Andrew

She's an intoxicating mix of tough and vulnerable I've never known before. This homeless woman who fits right into my upper-class world is running from someone powerful, and I'll do whatever it takes to protect her. But Quinn isn't meant to be controlled, so I'm forced to choose between owning her and loving her. I've finally met my match, and I'll do whatever it takes to make her truly mine.

EMOTIONAL, ENDEARING & REFRESHINGLY DIFFERENT

Wow.. this may have been my first Brenda Rothert book but it certainly won't be my last because she very quickly hooked me all the way in with her riveting story about twenty-one year old Quinn and her sixteen year old sister Bethy. They had fled their lives four years earlier and have been surviving on the streets, in the tunnels and in the hidden spaces of NYC ever since - trawling through dumpsters in search of morsels of food. And for two years they've had the support/friendship/guidance of Bear a thirty+ year old homeless man. Quinn is strong and she's determined to keep Bethy safe, protect her and provide for her sister no matter what.. but Bethy's getting sick. So, when a stranger offers Quinn $500 and will provide shelter and warmth for just one night, Quinn simply can't refuse.. even if it means temporarily splitting up with her sister and Bear.. even if it means selling her body.. and even if it means losing her virginity.

Successful businessman Andrew Wentworth has had his share of heartache and bad memories which has left him jaded with very high walls - so now he gets his assistant to find willing women all too ready to spend one hot night with the handsome sexy alpha twenty-eight year old in exchange for money. And, when Andrew is introduced to the beautiful blond his assistant has 'acquired' for the night, he thinks she's going to be just as greedy, just as flirtatious and just as manipulative as all his other hook-ups. But Andrew soon realizes that Quinn is NOTHING like the other women.. she is innocent, mysterious, strong-willed, caring, shy and totally uninterested in his money.. and him. Andrew instantly becomes charmed by Quinn's refreshing personality and makes her another proposition.. one that will eventually lead them on the path to their HEA. However, both of them are keeping secrets.. and bit by bit all is revealed as the plot, their secrets and their lives start to unfold and unravel.

What a wonderful dual POV slow-building love story this was between survivors of very different traumas who lowered their defences and gave up their secrets for love.. and fought their way to a better life. It picks up its pace towards the end as the focus changes from their budding building relationship - to the secrets that are keeping them apart and this injects twists, surprises and a bit of suspense too. There's dangerous drama and some angst along the way and, although they can't yet trust each other to share their secrets, these two loveable protective nurturing characters are very tender, compassionate, understanding and supportive of one another's feelings. Slowly Andrew shows Quinn how much he cares, what lengths he will go to to protect her and he teaches Quinn about passion and sexual desire too. Their journey brings them character growth, sexy times, testing times and happy times.. but, as Andrew and Quinn get closer and closer, Bethy Bear and the very real threat they ran away from, is never far from Quinn's thoughts. And, before their story can end, there will be tense times, twists and turbulence.

Worth a credit? Absolutely 100% yes.. a well-written meshing of two very different worlds, the emotional uniting of two very different characters and they are brought together by very different needs. However, at the end of their bitter-sweet struggles, what was left was a deep unwaivering soul-soul forever love. Ms Rothert's well-placed words formed wonderfully vivid and detailed scenes.. and the good, the bad, the shocking and the ugly were all brought to life by the talented team of narrators who each had a part in turning this awesome book into a 5* listen.

Ridiculous climax

I have to admit that this was a little disappointing. The story had potential and I was looking forward to finding out what had happened to make the sisters run. When the truth came to light, it was so anti-climatic it was ridiculous. Not to mention the guy who stayed with them while they were on the street - it seemed like the writer wanted to put the hero and heroin together so she twisted the friend to make readers hate him. All in all, the story was disappointing.

Riveting and Suspenseful!

I discovered Brenda Rothert through Audible’s “Romance Package.” This is a 2-2 winner - Come Closer was the first book I read. Her characters are likable and the storyline grabbed my attention and held it throughout the book, from beginning to end. Dual narration by Lee Smith and Kristen Leigh turns this book into a good performance. Definitely credit-worthy!

Premise with great potential falls woefully short

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

It's hard to say who would enjoy this book. The basic idea is a good one, and has great potential, but sadly it does not get off the ground.

What was most disappointing about Brenda Rothert’s story?

There are so many disappointments but I'll stick to the main ones. Both the main and peripheral characters where one dimensional for the most part, then mercurial in the most unexpected ways. Supposed friends and trusty assistants where turned into villains with little warning. The hero and heroine where irritatingly contradictory. Hero is supposed to be a strong, dominant, commitment phobic businessman, but after the first few chapters he suddenly turns into a love-sick sap. Also, his self-aggrandising declarations and thoughts hardly ever matched his actions.Heroine has apparently lived in the streets of NYC for five years when the book starts, but she makes such stupid mistakes and decisions so often it's a wonder she survived past toddlerhood. She is supposed to be smart and hugely protective of her sister, but she sends her little sister, who is only 16, to Mexico with a fellow homeless person, a man who is 36, rather than keep her close. (I should have stopped listening then) Oh, and to make things more ridiculous this man she entrusted her sister to turns out to be unhinged. That was a very annoying and stupid plot twist, but what's worse is how neatly and quickly was all resolved. Another thing I feel compelled to rant about: I really hated how the author tried to convince the readers of how very generous and wonderful the heroine was. She did the same with the hero, but it was really overdone with the heroine. There is nothing worse than having a character tell you how good, kind, smart, etc they are. If you want to show this to the reader show them through the point of view of another character. It's as annoying as when certain politicians announce to you how smart they are. It comes off as pretentious.

What three words best describe Lee Samuels and Kristen Leigh ’s performance?

They were both very good performers and their voices and reading styles were enjoyable to listen to. In all honesty they were the main reason I kept listening.

What character would you cut from His?

I don't know that I would cut any character. I think they all should have been written better.

Great story line

I listened to this audio all night long. I’m exhausted since I didn’t sleep a wink. I love it when I listen to a really good story.

Wow

all around awesome. Very much worth the credit or purchase. You don't have to wait until 3 chapters in to get hooked. I promise the first chapter will do it for you.

Inconsistent narration and shallow story

Dual narrators is usually good but in this case it was super inconsistent with the way the narrators played the secondary characters differently.

The story line its self is shallow. There is really no real reason for him to care other than she is “beautiful”.

I finished it but it wasn’t easy.

Entertaining

An entertaining, sexy, intriguing and unique type of romance. I didn't get into it as much I wanted to, though. It was still a decent read.

Surprising

Based on some comments and the description I had a totally different take on what the book was going to be from what it turned out to be. It turned out to be a rather sweet story.
