Publisher's Summary

When Mahony returns to Mulderrig, a speck of a place on Ireland's west coast, he brings only his handsome face, a photograph of his long-lost mother and a determination to do battle with the village's lies.

Mahony also somehow wakes the dead from their graves, with their foggy memories and hidden stories floating greyly amongst the unseeing living. No one, though - living or dead - will be able to guess what happened to the teenage mother who abandoned him as a baby.

Critic Reviews

"It’s utterly original and deeply enjoyable. It smacks you in the face from the first page and for the rest of the novel strokes your cheek." ( Canongate)

Brilliant narration of a great story.

This is a classic 'Who Dunnit?' that is written incredibly well. Full of belly laughs as well.

The narration is probably the best that I've heard on Audible.

Well worth your time!

Mesmerising

Compelling story narrated with warmth and humour. The magic and fantasy are subsumed in the overwhelming reality of the protagonist's journey. Will listen to this again and again.

Quite Simply fantastic!

This book was superb! from start to finish the author and narrator have you hooked. There are actual laugh out loud moments that defuse moments of high tension or sadness.

Just could not get into this

I am sure this is a great book and it has good reviews, however I just could not see it myself. The narrator Aidan Kelly was amazing and toook me so much further into the book, but even his lovely voice did not open this book up to me.

Jess Kidd tell a haunting story you just can’t stop listening to.

Jess Kidd tells a haunting story with the wonderful voice of Aidan Kelly. They paint a picture of question that keeps you easily listening to the end. Jess Kidd’s ability to place you right in the middle of the action, as if you your actually there is akin to Ray Bradbury. Well worth a listen and to all if Jess’s books.

Thoroughly Great Escapism

A story full of magic, whimsy, eccentric characters and Irish charm. This isn’t your average straight forward murder mystery but if you’re open to something a bit more unusual and enchanted then I can’t recommend this enough. Aidan Kelly does an amazing job of giving life and personality to all the quirky characters and Jess Kidd’s way with words is a triumph. I didn’t want this audio story to end.

Loved it...until the end

I thoroughly enjoyed this book right up until the very end. I found the ending unsatisfying with a few loose ends almost as though the author ran out of time to finish it properly. It's such a shame as the rest of the book was fantastic.
