Publisher's summary

Tricky is one of the most original music artists to emerge from the UK in the past 30 years. His signature sound, coupled with deep, questioning lyrics, took the UK by storm in the early 1990s and was part of the soundtrack that defined the post-rave generation.

This unique, no-holds barred autobiography is not only a portrait of an incredible artist - it is also a gripping slice of social history packed with extraordinary anecdotes and voices from the margins of society.

Tricky examines how his creativity has helped him find a different path to that of his relatives, some of whom were bare-knuckle fighters and gangsters, and how his mother's suicide has had a lifelong effect on him, both creatively and psychologically. With his unique heritage and experience, his story will be one of the most talked-about music autobiographies of the decade.

Wonderful book - narration too enthusiastic

I loved the insight this book provided into Tricky’s life. I’ve been a fan of his music for so many years, and this put it in perspective for me. It’s well written and honest.

The narration however did not, in my mind, capture the book well enough. It was, somehow, over enthusiastic with a lot of exclamations which, over time, got rather annoying.

It was still worth the listen, the merits of the book outweighing the narration.

Great and sad story

Very touching story. Well put together with memories of close people.
Badly read though. Even though the voice is very close to Tricky’s but actor is overacting, screaming when there is no need.
Entertaining but annoying to listen to sometimes.

Know All Best Boy

An honest insight in to a tricky mind.
Wouldve been best read by the man himself...the storyteller lacked depth with his over enthused exclaimings !! It needed to be told in darker hues...textured with genuine depth of experience. I oscillated between liking him.and wanting him to do one...the shouty mouth little prick .( Pacifist my arse). But Legend all the same. inspired to listen to his sonic journey now. see if he is as good as he proclaims himself to be or are they just the last rantings of an indulged delusional ex been. lets see....the mind is a Tricky place to Be.

more about his life than his music

had hoped for more info about the music he made rather than drug and gangster tales.

HELL IS ROUND THE CORNER

Wishing it was narrated by Tricky aside (hence rating of 3*), I don’t know why I chose this as my 2nd Audible book. In the same way I was drawn to Tricky’s music and the hardback copy I own. It’s an excellent read for anyone, not just those who love his/any music. It’s a raw story of struggle, truth, innocence, naivety. For me it is about survival. Whoever guided my ear here I thank them. For whilst my life is happier and I cope better, I am still engulfed by darkness that threatens to pull me under. Every time Tricky says ‘whatever’ & pushes on, I say the same. The tragic ending of this book reminds me of the pain I almost visited on my family & I cry because I am so happy to be here and I feel so guilty that I couldn’t find another way out. Tricky’s book is testament that there is always light at the end of the tunnel. There is a reason why we only had the briefest of non verbal encounters in The Dugout many decades ago and we are both still here. I will share this book amongst my friends (most of whom won’t know/like) his music because sometimes you need to hear it from a stranger and not someone close to you. 🌹X

Tricky Laid Bare

I bought this audio book to put on the virtual shelf that is my audio book library. One that I'd pick up when the time was right.
A week ago I started listening and I don't know what the Audible equivalent of a page turner is, but that is what this is.
Whether you're an avid fan of all things Tricky or a newcomer to his music and art, this book has something about it that makes it essential listening.
A complex character, in this book Tricky lays his cards on the table. This isn't a snippet of his life, its a fly on the wall recounting of the roller coaster of his time on this planet. From his ghetto upbringing in Bristol and the childhood tragedy of his mother's suicide, to the recent history of his financial troubles and the rediscovery of his lost mojo, via New York, LA, Paris and more recently Berlin, the uncomprimising artist that he is jumps off the page, or in this case into your ear.
It becomes clear that his life is a product of his honesty, "I know fuck all about music" and honesty is here in abundance.

I usually prefer the biographical audio books that are read by the author, or at least the subject of the biography, but the fact that this isn't the case here doesn't go down as a negative. The subject matter is enthralling and in all honesty, due to the expression and passion with which it is read, at times I forgot that it wasn't Tricky himself that I was listening to.

I highly recommend this book for those that were around in the early nineties and either dipped their toes into, or submerged themselves in, the music of the time.

Hell Is Just Around The Corner is a superb listen and takes you with the subject through the highs and lows of an artist who might just be unique.

Outstanding Autobiography

A really great account of an amazing and groundbreaking artist. Written in a simple, straightforward style and extremely well narrated. Even readers not familiar with Tricky’s work should find this a compelling listen.

Tricky

What a guy. Absolutely brilliant story. From a dosgy family, dodgey streets and the countries he lived in. And a huge thanks to the narrations who made you feel like you were living alongside him.
Definitely recommend.

Fascinating insight into a brilliant artist

I'll never forget seeing Tricky (in the dark!) at the Melbourne Big Day Out. The experience, the music, the performance was magnificent. This autobiography is fascinating, like himself. It does end with a gut punch I wasn't expecting (not having heard that news).

Good but not fantastic.

I love Tricky but the writing is average though interesting enough to listen right through.
I didn't like the reader.

An incredible, compelling story

Absolutely loved this book. Been a huge fan of his work so to hear how he fell into producing and his life's journey to date was such a compelling story. Such honesty, and a reluctantly to acknowledge his fame, along with self sabotage. The narration was superb, loved the accent and innotionation. Total recommend.
