Publisher's summary

Long-listed, Barnes and Noble Best New Books of the Year, 2023

"The magic and violence of 'Hell Bent' comes to life in audiobook form."–USA Today

"This fervently delivered audiobook engrosses the listener through every twist and turn, making this sequel nearly impossible to pause."–AudioFile Magazine (Earphones Award)

Wealth. Power. Murder. Magic. The Ivy League is going straight to hell in the sequel to the smash New York Times bestseller Ninth House from #1 bestselling author Leigh Bardugo.

"Bardugo’s imaginative reach is brilliant."–Stephen King

Find a gateway to the underworld. Steal a soul out of hell. A simple plan, except people who make this particular journey rarely come back. But Galaxy “Alex” Stern is determined to break Darlington out of purgatory—even if it costs her a future at Lethe and at Yale.

Forbidden from attempting a rescue, Alex and Dawes can’t call on the Ninth House for help, so they assemble a team of dubious allies to save the gentleman of Lethe. Together, they will have to navigate a maze of arcane texts and bizarre artifacts to uncover the societies’ most closely guarded secrets, and break every rule doing it. But when faculty members begin to die off, Alex knows these aren’t just accidents. Something deadly is at work in New Haven, and if she is going to survive, she’ll have to reckon with the monsters of her past and a darkness built into the university’s very walls.

Thick with history and packed with Bardugo’s signature twists, Hell Bent brings to life an intricate world full of magic, violence, and all too real monsters.

Critic reviews

"Thrilling ... fascinating supporting players ... The taut plot, often grisly magic, lavish scene-setting, and wry humor combine to make this just as un-put-downable as the first installment. Readers will be wowed."Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Bardugo doesn’t flinch from the dark sides of magic and human nature….This portrait of a survivor’s dogged determination to accomplish her goal will appeal to readers of dark academia, urban fantasy, and horror.”Booklist (starred review)

Vivid, intelligent, and funny at just the right moments, but best of all are the complex characters.”Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

I didn’t wait for my husband

We listen to audiobooks before bed. I usually pause the book as soon as he nods off and listen to something else, but this time I didn’t. I listened until six am. Then I continued listening as soon as I woke up. There’s something about Lauren Fortgang’s performance that makes Alex so compelling. I read Ninth House originally and thoroughly enjoyed it, but I listened to it with my husband on a road trip later on and felt sucked in in a completely different way. So I committed fully to Hell Bent in audiobook format this time and I’m so glad I did. I can’t wait to do another listen more slowly with my husband.

Ninth House/Hell Bent

Another remarkable story by Leigh Bardugo. Narrated by Lauren Fortgang. Every time I hear her voice it’s like an old friend coming home. Brilliant.

Hoping for a third

I was nervous about this book because I liked the first book a lot and I wanted so bad for the second book to hold up to the standards of the the first. I’m glad that it did, in fact my expectations were far exceeded. I would definitely recommend it and I really hope she is planning for more with these characters!

Good not great

I really liked the first book and love Leigh Bardugo but this dull in content and weirdly sexual in places. Too my any characters and too many “events”. Left book feeling like “who cares”. Additionally all the dropping/teases for the continuation of series “we killed the demon…there are always more demons” yea I get it. Probably will continue with this series but will read other books by author this series has an “ick” factor that is not comfortable for me.

Slow, predictable and boring

If you suffered through ninth house don't waste your time here even to resolve the cliffhanger. just rambles on. Details into non-important story sidelines.

Great continuation

I really enjoyed Ninth House and absolutely loved Hell Bent!! Fast paced, attention grabbing and attention keeping! I wish Lauren Fortgang read every audiobook!! It was so great to have the gang from Il Bastone back! Can’t wait to see what Ms Bargugo does next!

Unbelievably good

Bardugo is wickedly smart and creative in crafting the Alex Stern series. I found myself transfixed by the story. Fortgang delivers an immersive performance.
