Publisher's summary

A new fight for the throne begins, and this time, Rowan's heart is on the line.

Second in the Winter Charlatan duology.

Rowan’s sleeping curse is broken by a stranger's kiss. Their happily ever after should begin, but they aren't in love. They struggle to develop feelings as plots of betrayal, mysterious deaths, and a sword-wielding mother-in-law challenge them.

When the king sets up a Queen’s Competition as an attempt to settle unrest, Rowan’s place is threatened. She must fight for the prince she ought to love to secure his position at court, while competing in challenges that seek to unravel her, bit by bit. For though they can force her to compete, she’s the only competitor who knows she can never truly win.

Just as Rowan finds her place, a poison apple could destroy it all.

Filled with romance, danger, mystery, and twists of familiar fairytales, including Snow White and Princess and the Pea.

a little of every fairytale.

in these last 2 books the author used a little of every fairytale she could find. a little annoying but it was good after finishing it. on where you say I liked the story but reading or listening to it it felt to much of a mut of a fairytale.

Romantic fairytale retelling

Two things I really liked about this story. I loved how it picked up the tale of Sleeping Beauty after the kiss, and I loved how the two main characters didn't immediately fall in love. I adore a good slow-burn romance and it was fun to see the characters have a romance that developed slowly and had meaning to it. They faced real struggles and had hard issues to overcome, all set in a fairytale setting, before potentially getting an HEA. It was fun to read a non-insta-love fairytale.

The other thing I really liked was how the author wove in snippets from at least two other well-known fairytales into this Sleeping Beauty retelling. I wasn't expecting that, so it was a good twist, especially if you're a big fan of fairytales. Which I am!

I would highly recommend this book/series to anyone who enjoys YA fantasy, clean fantasy, romantic fantasy, and/or fairytale fantasy. The settings are beautiful, the plot keeps you entertained, and the characters get better as the stories develop.

I listened to the audiobook and Nichole James has such a pleasant, easy voice to listen to. She did a beautiful job narrating this book.

*I received a free ARC of this audiobook and this is my honest opinion.*

Unpredictably Fantastic

This book was great the narrator was wonderful. This book takes you on the second part of this journey that has so many twists and turns is just completely mystifying and amazing. I’m glad I didn’t stop at the first book.
