Publisher's summary

Intrepid hero Cork O'Connor faces the most harrowing mission of his life when a charter plane carrying his wife, Jo, goes missing in a snowstorm over the Wyoming Rockies. Months after the tragedy, two women show up on Cork's doorstep with evidence that the pilot of Jo's plane was not the man he claimed to be. It may not be definitive proof, but it's a ray of light in the darkness.

Agreeing to investigate, Cork travels to Wyoming, where he battles the interference of local law enforcement who may be on the take, the open hostility of the Northern Arapaho, who have much to lose if the truth is known, and the continuing attempts on his life by assassins who shadow his every move. At the center of all the danger and deception lies the possibility that Jo's disappearance was not the end of her, that somewhere along the labyrinthine path of his search, maybe even in the broad shadow of Heaven's Keep itself, Cork will find her alive and waiting for him.

intriguing

this was an intriguing read with so many twists and turns, who would have expected the outcome. it was so special realizing how love was woven into corruption and evil. the characters are powerful and the plot kept me wanting you move forward to the end.

Maybe a wee bit long ...

Love this series, although this one was kinda gut wrenching. No spoiler, but I thought there was one part of the ending that was a bit far fetched

Not my favorite Cork O’Conner story

I’ve loved the Cork O’Conner stories by William Kent Krueger. I really enjoy the stories of the indigenous peoples, in all of their complexities.

I had a really hard time with this book because of David Chandler’s monotonous and unemotional narration. Even when someone is facing death, uncertainty, or an excruciating broken heart, they all sound like they’re ordering coffee.

Narrators should be adding to the book’s interpretation, not be a cause for the listener to keep looking at how much longer one has to still listen.

I’m not sure I can bear listening to another book narrated by David Chandler. He has strengths as a narrator, but this book series isn’t it. He’d be great narrating business books, or something that doesn’t call for any emotion.

A must read

Great read. Read Iron Lake first! Love Krueger’s books
Only complaint I wish he would not use the Lord’s name in vain!

Great story. Saddest in the series

Great story. My only quibble is I wish the motive was a little stronger. I like how the story developed, with no real mystery until halfway through the story.

WOW. Didn't see THAT coming!

Author not afraid to write the hard thing into the narrative without the typical lachrymose crescendo. Well done, sir.

Feel like I’m right there!

I absolutely love his books. I feel like I’m standing right there next to the characters. I can see everything is going on. He is such a great description and I love the author. Thank you for another great book.

bad narrator

I love these stories, awesome series! but for whatever reason in this I can hear every sound the narrator makes. he's smacking his lips or something. every swallow I can hear. it's annoying and distracting. if I didn't want to hear the story so bad I would have shut it off
