It is long past time for the publication of a well-researched, definitive biography of the infamous western outlaw Harvey Alexander Logan, better known by his alias, Kid Curry. In Wyoming he became involved in rustling and eventually graduated to bank and train robbing as a member - and soon leader - of the Wild Bunch. The core members of the gang came to be Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, George "Flatnose" Currie, Elzy Lay, Ben "the Tall Texan" Kilpatrick, Will Carver, and Kid Curry.

Kid Curry has been portrayed as a cold-blooded killer, without any compassion or conscience, and possessed of limited intelligence. Curry indeed was a dangerous man with a violent temperament, which was aggravated by alcoholic drink. Mark Smokov has researched extensively in areas significant to Curry's story and corrects the many false statements that have been written about him in the past.

Curry was a cunning outlaw who planned and executed robberies on par with anything Butch Cassidy is reported to have pulled off. Smokov contends that Curry was the actual train robbing leader of the Wild Bunch - there is no concrete evidence that Cassidy ever robbed a train.

How the West was lived for certain folks . . .

Although I am not en expert on the topic, this is a seemingly well researched look at the Wild West and a legend of those times. This is not typically the type of book that I get into, and that could be part of the reason it seemed to move a bit slow for me and required an extra amount of perseverance for me to get through. Aside from that, I found the story to be rather interesting and the narration went quite a ways in keeping me on-board with the work; it does last over 11hours.

All in all, I would recommend this book to everyone with an deep interest in this time period of American history. I would also say that it may be something to explore for those looking for something new as far as U.S. history goes.

Who was the real Harvey Logan?

The goal of author Mark T. Smokov in "He Rode with Butch and Sundance" is to separate facts from myths by examining the "Kid Curry" historical sources. The book explores Logan's days in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid's infamous Wild Bunch and his association with the Ketchum gang. Smokov traces the Logan family history, and how the brothers turned to a life outside of the law. The author opens the Pinkerton files, and reveals the information the famous detective agency had collected on his gang, and their subsequent searches for the robbers. Smokov also discusses the ill-fated "Fort Worth Five" photograph, and how it benefited investigators. Forget the dime novels, this is true history of the old west. Additionally, the author explores the many rumors and Wild Bunch folk lore.

Opens your eyes to the real old west

What a great book! I learned so much about the 18-1900's old west while listening to this book. For example, not everyone was convicted for crimes they were accused of committing.. and a lot of the examples from actual history referenced made me think that in the old days, a trial by jury was a real trial by jury! Anyway, into the book...Kid Curry I didn't know much about prior to this book ,but come to find out he actually was involved in a lot of the stories you hear about with many of the "famous" outlaws of the train and bank robbery old west. The who,what and where was well reasearched and explained. A lot of the stories tied the people involved together like a tapestry and painted to a really easy to understand history of Kidd Curry and his co-conspirators. If you like the old west, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kidd ....you'll love this book!
